(Translated here into English, but discussion was in German)

First, to make it clear, these were Polizei Bayern, NOT Bundespolizei

Police, showing his ID: "Gruß Gott!" (Bavarian hello, means Greet God! - always makes this atheist annoyed). "Identity check!"

Me: "Could I ask, why are you controlling?"

P: "This is a train to Austria!"

M: "Yes, we are LEAVING Germany!"

P: "Yes, but it is still a border!"

M: "But sorry, I am leaving. Why are you checking?"

Dear friends of #BSDCafe - the BSD Cafe Journal needs some attention.

This isn't the best time for me to revive it myself, and that's exactly why I'm counting on you!

I'm sure you have great ideas, thoughts, projects, and articles that would fit perfectly in that space.

So don’t be shy 🙂
The BSD Cafe Journal is waiting for you!

URGENT: Please Write the FCC to Oppose Latest SpaceX World-Changing Plan, Massively Light Polluting Reflect Orbital Satellites, Which Will End the Night Sky

"The Reflect Orbit satellites will produce a simply incredible level of light pollution to the degree that it will end the night as we know it. The impact on life, not just nocturnal species but even plant life, cannot be estimated and is potentially catastrophic. There is another pollution-generating SpaceX energy-generating scheme."

Time to announce something new: @aiscarvalho and me have set up a dedicated consultancy to help organisations migrate away from big tech platforms.

devicediversa.org

We help inform your decisions: we map your requirements, present alternatives, list the pros and cons involved, and give you support and advice throughout the migration process.

We draw from our 15+ year experience using F/LOSS software and managing our digital infrastructure in order to help other organisations do the same, with technical expertise that we know how to convey in clear and human terms.

So if you know an organisation that wants to get away from Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Dropbox, Salesforce, Zoom, Notion, AirTable, Adobe or Figma, we're here to help!

We were able to restore IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity. Performance is still not optimal, and connections are occasionally dropping. We've taken measures to try and maintain uptime overnight (with a certain probability).

Routes protected by iocaine (crawler protection) may return 503 errors. Currently, it appears that these packets are also occasionally being lost.

It's 2:30am, and we require a good night's sleep before we can look into this further.

Almost every web hosting provider relies on Amazon, Google, or Microsoft infrastructure. We're creating Henhouse to operate on servers owned by small businesses and co-ops. And we made Henhouse a co-op, too! Learn more and contribute at opencollective.com/henhouse #bigtech

John Fetterman just voted with every Senate Republican (except Rand Paul) to block legislation aimed at halting Trump's disastrous war of choice with Iran.

Fetterman and his GOP colleagues now share ownership of Trump’s stupid, unpopular, unjustified, and already tragic war — and the fallout. ms.now/news/trump-iran-war-pow

NEW: “From Iran to Palestine, stop the U.S. war machine,” chanted the crowd of hundreds that showed up to Chicago Ave. and Lake St. in south Minneapolis on Feb. 28 for an emergency anti-war protest against the U.S. and Israeli war on Iran. Just hours earlier, at least 165 people — mostly schoolgirls — were killed when bombs struck an Iranian elementary school.

Hi all, we are aware of a service disruption and are currently investigating. We apologize for the inconvenience and kindly ask for your continued patience.

### Public Funding
We also discussed collaboration with municipal governments. Some (like Barcelona) have been burned by corporate contracts. The big challenge is service agreements; fulfilling them requires more capacity than some of coop cloud's members can handle - though digidemlab.org/en/ offers a compelling model and partner for collaboration.

First up, another excellent summary from @amras of the kite-flying they facilitated last week: (1/3)

### Roles
We chatted about our gap wrt admin, management, and finance roles. We have high hopes for our new finance applicants! And we absolutely want to see more people involved who don't call themselves "technical".

### Support for Maintainers
We discussed how signing up to be a maintainer currently feels like also needing to define the process of maintenance (e.g. release strategies, stability concerns). The maintenance work itself is relatively easy, but the process could be better documented.

### Democratic Tech Fund
With the DemocraticTech.Fund spinning up, we chatted about its goals. The priority is to increase the social capacity of tech, not create new technologies. The fund hopes to do this through setting up and supporting collectives to use services, raise awareness, and campaign for democratic tech.

To make it concrete: to move away from Microsoft (teams, sharepoint) and Google (drive), Nextcloud is a decent option, but you may also want decentralised group chat like matrix, maybe a better collaborative document server, à La Suite Docs, video conferencing like BBB or La Suite Visio. And of course a Single Sign On - one account to log on.

Altogether this is not something every individual person or collective may want to run for themselves, so you need a service provider, ideally a cooperative one, where you can be a member of and collectively maintain a production team and a process to evolve together - as technologies (and social needs) evolve.
In this sense the @coopcloud federation provides a backbone to work together on the development and maintenance of the tech stack as a "configuration commons". With the #dtf we became members, and it is exciting to see what is cooking there and how people/cooperatives collaborate along shared goals.

Slightly more information about this #citizenInitiative here for a #European #SocialMedia here: citizens-initiative.europa.eu/

IF This reaches the required amount of signatures it will have to be examined by the European Commission. What conclusion the commission will come to I cannot predict, but it may consider the option of building on existing infrastructure *cough* #mastodon *cough* …
These processes take quite a long time, but I’ll keep updating here ;)
