If I wanted to be on a "better" Twitter after the Musk takeover, I would open a BlueSky account. It delivers the same centralised, algorithm driven experience that divides in overhyped influencers and mere click fodder users, just the way all centralised "social" networks are designed to be.

And that's why I am NOT on BlueSky but here on the Fediverse. The Fediverse isn't a better X, Facebook, Instagram. It's the Fediverse. People to people. Embrace the principle and you will be happy here!

@ShaulaEvans @AndrewRadev @ericgoldman i feel like this comparison does asbestos a disservice

asbestos is _really_ good at the thing it does (being fibery and fire-resistant). it's a genuinely useful thing that, were it not for the downsides, would benefit our civilization greatly

GenAI isn't particularly good or useful for much of anything

RE: ec.social-network.europa.eu/@E

Oh we have the same wish!

I think it would be a powerful move if you would delete your X account (a platform that has become a vector of misinformation and a cesspool of hate).

By the way, your homepage states: "Follow us on" followed by the icons of Facebook, X and LinkedIn. I always found it odd, since those are algorithm-based U.S. companies and you are the EUROPEAN Commission. How about putting your Mastodon icon on your homepage?

Thank you for your consideration

We have removed all AI-generated nonsense issue spam and deployed a hot patch, issue creation is enabled again.

We'll monitor the situation throughout the night.

We investigated performance issues on our systems. The cause was identified to be huge inrush in AI-generated nonsense spam creation that slows the notification system.

We have temporarily disabled the creation of new issues while we clean up the noise. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Censor, a new document redaction tool, is there!

It allows to draw black rectangles on PDF documents and to permanently remove the text and images below. Find it on @Codeberg: codeberg.org/censor/Censor, get it from @flathub: flathub.org/apps/page.codeberg, or translate it on Codeberg Translate: translate.codeberg.org/engage/!

It is a free and open-source graphical user interface (GUI) for #Linux and the #GNOME desktop, and uses the #MuPDF library with its #python bindings from the #PyMuPDF module.

@fnat @duncan_bayne As far as I know it is just their hosted offer and you can certainly easily remove it from their pre-packaged Prosody if you want. I also tested it with Ejabberd and it worked fine, but their Prosody addons seem to add a few nice usability improvements.

Welp, the self-hosted, open-core, Mattermost release just introduced a 10k message limit on each channel.

Time to look for alternatives ...

“Why don’t you just use AI?”

How dare I try to do finals without AI and try to use my brain. How dare I have a moral backbone and actually try to use the one gift I have… myself.

The atomic ensemble time scale at the NIST Boulder campus has failed.

In September I virtually disappeared from social media.

I had a flare up so bad I lost the ability to write.

The fear that I would never recover became all consuming.

The “what ifs” were unrelenting.

It’s taken 3 months to be able to write about it.

My latest is about baselines, flares & how to ask for help:

Companies that say this are implicitly admitting that they are terrible at retention. Their senior engineers are not people who used to be their junior engineers, those people leave as soon as they can find another job. They get senior engineers from other companies and probably don’t hold onto them for very long either because their working conditions are so toxic.

It’s very useful for them to be so open about it.

My mum (wearing glasses since a few months) struggles to read the small text on the design of a Christmas card she received from a friend. The large text is readable, but the small text just cannot be read. Maybe it's the bad choice of color contrast and it looked better before print, is her best guess.

Well, turns out the whole image (including the text) is AI generated, and the small font doesn't even spell out correct words, sometimes even not correct letters but mangled together shapes that somehow look like text from far away.

How do people just accept this as "good enough" these days to send to all their loved ones?

Just when I thought I couldn't love the library's Christmas tree even more, I read the sign.

'Come and pluck our book tree! Between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on the 22nd, you can pick free books from our Christmas tree and give them a new home. Bring a bag - enjoy your new reads!'

@aral I'm Jewish, I have family in Israel and I lived with my partner in Tel Aviv for 3 months, a decade ago. But I'm outraged at the atrocities Israel has been committing and I'm infuriated both by people who conflate opposition to Israel with antisemitism, as well as those who use hatred of Israel as a justification for actual antisemitic acts. Being Jewish and a supporter of Israel are not the same thing. And I see it as the duty of Jewish people everywhere to stand against genocide.
