with a special shout-out to @shollyethan and @ilja who, a year ago, encouraged me to try self-hosting. And of course immense gratitude to the @yunohost team for making all this possible ❤️
I hope this guide may inspire others to try it, too. The path to digital independence and empowerment is easier than you thought...

Last week in the United States of America, Congress began fast-tracking nearly 20 bills in a massive effort to enact massive censorship on the internet, decimate your ability to use computers privately, and severely restrict free speech online.
We sat down with @taylorlorenz to dissect these 'Bad Internet Bills' and what you need to know to stop them: https://www.privacyguides.org/videos/2025/12/16/taylor-lorenz-on-kosa-the-screen-act-and-repealing-section-230/

Ran into a problem in prod?
Just generate a fake cloudflare error page and blame it on them - gives you time to fix.
By the way, if anyone's interested in the construction of the greenhouse, there's an album for that: https://photos.lane.net.nz/index.php?/category/126
@futurebird There aren't any such problems.
AI costs more and does worse than any available alternative including not doing the thing at all.
(The tiny number of really hard practical stats problems where this isn't true, they get violent if you try to call what they're doing AI.)
@ophiocephalic ahahaha incredible
these capitalist fuckers can’t help themselves. everything has to be a grift. they’ll sell Karl Marx NFTs and a Kropotkin metaverse moderated by slave labor if they think anyone’s buying
so many of the people who for years wrote about how the actual duty of a senior software developer is to remove code from the codebases and molding the junior coworkers into fully-fledged professionals is now enthusiastically writing about inducing confabulation machines to extrude enormous amounts of code-like product, and how glorious it is that the infinite lies machine made junior developers obsolete.

Yesterday, my colleagues were flabbergasted when I said that I don't use any chatbots. Well, here's one of the major reasons why
A little belatedly sharing this piece that I published in The Chronicle of Higher Educations's Opinion Forum (sorry full text is paywalled)

Ugh, listening to RNZ right now - Kathryn Ryan talking to a US correspondent, who's just stated, with what sounds like a straight face, that US Republicans are saying that the reduced tax on wealthy people will 'trickle down' to poor people. And Kathryn didn't even question the legitimacy of that concept. Come on Kathryn, you need to call this stuff out.

A Moscow court has officially labelled Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot an 'extremist group'.
Founding member Nadya Tolokonnikova, now living in exile, is not phased however:
"When I was tried for the punk prayer, facing seven years in a labor camp, I told the judge and prosecutors that I was still freer than they would ever be," she said in comments sent to AFP. "In today's Russia, telling the truth is extremism. So be it – we're proud extremists, then."

Urgent support needed for Camp Sovereignty
Camp Sovereignty is holding the line through the winter. That takes real, ongoing resources. To give a very concrete sense of what that means: it costs around $600 a week in gasoline just to run the generators. That doesn’t include food, winter gear, repairs, or the countless other day-to-day needs of keeping a camp alive in freezing conditions. People are committed to being there all winter.
Anything you can give—$5, $20, $100—makes a difference. Sustained struggles aren’t powered by big institutions; they’re powered by lots of regular people stepping up however they can.
If you can’t donate money right now, there’s another solid way to help:
Organize a screening of Blockade.
Host it in your community, at a school, a union hall, a café, or in your living room. You can also invite land defenders to join by Zoom and speak directly about what’s happening on the ground. It’s a powerful way to raise funds and build real understanding and solidarity.
All the details on how to organize a screening and support the camp are here:

Frontline camps like this exist because people refuse to look away. Thanks to everyone who keeps showing up, sharing, donating, and standing in solidarity.

“tests from earlier this year found that AI agents failed to complete tasks up to 70% of the time, making them almost entirely redundant as a workforce replacement tool. At best, they're a way for skilled employees to be more productive and save time on low-level tasks, but those tasks were already being handed off to lower-level employees. Having an AI do it and fail half the time isn't exactly a winning alternative.”
