you know what's fun? the growing realization that a lot of Americans have no idea what rabies is

Trying to get a Thinkpad T430s working again.

It was working a few years ago, but now the only thing that happens when I push the power button is that the button light turns on, there's fan whir, optical drive click, keyboard light flash... and then nothing. The battery light also responds to AC connect/disconnect. Nothing on VGA port.

I left it unplugged for a while, replaced the backup battery (which was down to 1V), and same results.

What else should I be checking?

DOGE and others in the administration want to build a giant database of records by haphazardly combining info the government collected for one purpose, like paying taxes, and use it for another purpose, like targeting immigrants. We can't let this happen. takebackctrl.org/get-a-warrant

The body-worn camera “that was sold to us as a police accountability tool should not be turned into a shaming-random-civilians tool,” EFF’s @Adam_D_Schwartz told Vox.

#30DayMapChallenge Day 7: Accessibility 🌍✈️

I mapped visa-free travel:
🛫outbound (where citizens can go) and 🛬inbound (who countries let in).

It reveals global mobility inequality and rising deglobalisation. Borders are tightening due to geopolitics, trade, migration fears & right-wing politics.

This affects researchers & global collaboration.

I could probably scam a few billion by wearing a fleece vest and claiming to have invented a fridge that has a built-in food* replicator.

If you are unaware Perplexity is an AI company; the paper is owned by Bezos, one of the largest stakeholders in the industry

And this is just a snapshot of the problem

Earlier this week #TeenVogue was folded into #Vogue US and its parent company #CondeNast fired 6 reporters who fearlessly covered politics, speaking truth to power ("coincidentally" they were mostly BIPOC women or trans). Talk about capitulating to the current political climate.

I know it's not much, but this morning I canceled my WIRED & New Yorker subscriptions (also owned by Condé Nast)... and made sure to let them know my reason. Plus I added a note about their awful AI narrations #noAI
