It is WILD that we now live in a time where my job as an astrophysics professor has gone from "learn cool things about space" to "try to get someone to hold billionaires accountable for dropping shit on us from orbit"

Peter Thiel is competing with Elon Musk for most evil tech lord, with a different strategy.

Musk is doing a lot of his foul work in plain sight. It seems that Thiel is trying to keep the public from understanding what he's doing until it's too late to stop him.

One of the nice things about living on the Reservation: every now and then the Tribe sends a box of food to everyone in town, tribal member or not. Produce, meat, even some frozen Flathead cherries. CSKT ftw.

Here’s what we’ve got planned for October. See you there!

For over 100 days, journalist Mario Guevara has been detained by U.S. law enforcement for his livestream reporting.

He is the only journalist behind bars for his journalism, and he could be deported for doing his job.

We demand his immediate release.

man when people were telling me that smart TVs are a privacy nightmare, I thought that was because they recorded what you watched using their built in media-player OS.

NOPE! Apparently Roku TV's will give you popups based on what DVDs you're watching through them, because they screenshot the HDMI-in and compare it to a database.
that's a few steps creepier than I was expecting from a garden variety privacy invasion

@lwriemen regardless, one thing is for certain, it's way easier to get away with being lazy and/or incompetent at a desk job than it is in the building trades.

From the book Idiotism: Capitalism and the Privatization of Life, by Neal Curtis (2012)

Why the politics of "you should make better/more ethical lifestyle choices" is misguided and counterproductive.

[note: in Curtis's book, 'idiot' and 'idiotism' refer not to a lack of intelligence, but rather the insistence that everything is a private/personal matter - as in the original Greek 'idios,' which means private]

New year's resolution: file one actively annoying bug report per day.

Instead of, you know, learning to live with suck.

For more on the “big autism announcement” and what it means for the disability community, check out my latest article.

I attempt to highlight the eugenicist intent behind their message while also appealing to the non disabled community to help fight for us: disabledginger.com/p/trumps-bi

News: Sinclair Won’t Air Jimmy Kimmel’s Return on Its 38 ABC Stations

"Jimmy Kimmel may be returning to ABC Tuesday night, but his show will remain dark in a large swath of the U.S., with Sinclair Broadcast Group saying that it will preempt the show.:

hollywoodreporter.com/business

If you live in a Sinclair TV station market, perhaps they and their advertisers would appreciate hearing from you.

Today’s autism announcement was just as bad as we feared

Trump blamed Tylenol & vaccines for autism

He encouraged women to just “tough out” their pain

He praised people who don’t “need” meds or vaccines

These are eugenicist talking points & they’re devastating to the disability community.

My latest looks at the threat to our lives, as well as how we can support one another.

We must not give up hope, but we need our non disabled allies to fight with us.

Refuse to see us as expendable and help us demand better:

@mackiwg and, incidentally, for about the same cost as what our single MailChimp account would currently cost us annually, we're making 54 separate web services - including all of the services for a full online university - available to our learners and our educator community, serving at least 100 million visitors/year. I think our approach is revolutionary in the midst of this 'cost of living' crisis most of us find ourselves in.

Show thread

I should note, too, that Mautic is far more powerful in many ways than MailChimp, and is fully #libre. If you want see an earlier case study on our use of Mautic, see irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/ar and search for 'CastStudy' - it's a peer-reviewed journal paper we wrote a few years back.

Show thread

Huh, how time flies. 6 or 7 years ago, at the OER Foundation, for whom I work as Open Source Technologist, we decided to replace our MailChimp with, eventually, a self-hosted instance of Mautic (mautic.org) to communicate with learners taking courses in our online open university courses (oeru.org)... We made the change when we had about 5k contact. We now have 66k. Wondering how much we're saving every year...
