I’m legit so proud of all the work that’s gone into the new @elementary Dock. Plank development had stagnated for years and now we have something drawn entirely with @GTK that’s even more beautifully animated and we’ve blown past it in terms of feature set and usability, all based on survey data. The kind of experiences we can deliver with our native toolkit these days is really mind blowing

When I was writing my latest book, Move Slowly and Build Bridges, I talked about the stakes: corporate social media is accruing incredible power and is increasingly tied to state power. We need noncommercial, non- centralized media.
Honestly, I thought I overstated it when I wrote the book. That I was being a bit too dour. (I think the editor felt that way)
Today? I want to go back and revise it and go even harder at big tech.
I just wrote a new blog post... "It's Aotearoa".... https://davelane.nz/its-aotearoa
A lot of people will start learning very fast about privacy on Discord.
Or rather, that there is no privacy on Discord.
> Five hours after Charlie Kirk was shot this week, an Atlanta man got a phone call from an Illinois police officer asking about a photo he shared with a couple of close friends on a private Discord chat.

If you run any kind of project or community and use Discord, this would be a very good time to reconsider your choice of a platform.
The 80-year-old owner of a Van Nuys carwash, an American citizen, suffered multiple injuries after he was run over and tackled by federal agents, who detained him and five of his employees.

Speaking as someone who was a customer of Ben & Jerry's back when their empire was a defunct gas station in Burlington, Vermont...
Regarding the bogus notion that Charlie Kirk was doing politics "the right way," Mike Masnick nails it here: "When we praise bad-faith performers for “engaging” with their critics, we’re not celebrating democratic norms—we’re rewarding those who exploit them."
ABC, which capitulated to Trump months ago by paying him millions to "settle" his ridiculous libel lawsuit, should be seen for what it has become: a national media company that does right-wing bidding.
The Hungary-izing of American media is accelerating.
Finally, some arrests associated with the Epstein case...
...except it is of four people in the UK involved in this piece of public service broadcasting/protest, a mini-doco projected onto the walls of Windsor Castle on the evening a certain foreign visitor came for a sleepover.
Their alleged offence? Their brief and accurate overview of publicly-available information about said guest made someone feel bad.
More people ought to see this.

If you still have an account on academia.edu, you should probably delete it.
I'm not sure how their new terms are legal: they give the site the right to use your data *in any manner*. This is mainly to help them scrape academic work and republish/mangle parts of it through AI without credit: but these terms go way beyond that into your likeness, your voice, even your signature.
Please boost this to academics you know. Further PSA elements in thread:
Trump ally Larry Ellison, one of Silicon Valley's historically nastier characters, could soon control CNN and TikTok. (Other people are involved including the reprehensible Andreessen Horowitz VC firm and Ellison's son.)
The Hungary-izing of "news" gets worse and worse.
FWIW we've had people oceans away conferencing in to CriticalSignals (https://criticalsignals.nz) using a self-hosted BigBlueButton instance, calls recorded and uploaded to self-hosted Nextcloud, able to be shared publicly with a click. The last was from Ireland - a formidable network distance to here in Aotearoa, and with a couple of dozen participants remoting in, panelists included. Not only can it be done, but in this year of 2025 it works great.
@CommonMugwort And it can be done. I've moved many people and groups off Zoom to BigBlueButton, and also from Slack to Mattermost (whose UX many say improves on Slack). These are thousands of people, and just two examples.
It just takes a few in a community to share the load. Some may adopt a non-profit micro-economy built around admin and support.
The platform morale than comes from community owned and operated,, privacy-respecting tooling - when done right - is not to be underestimated!
Very pleased to present another round of Tunnel and Fortress, live classes in the design, deployment & administration of self-hosted, tightly secured & sovereign server infrastructure.
The classes draw from 2 decades deploying dozens of servers & services for orgs & groups, big & small, & often with powerful adversaries.
I want to teach you to be able to do the same, to get the communities you care about off Big Tech.
