Now is the time to build structures that can withstand the storms of tomorrow. Now is the time to extend and consolidate our connections. Our respective circumstances will continue to deteriorate, but tipping points of all kinds will create opportunities for change that we can turn to our advantage, provided we are ready. Every step we take, every obstacle we overcome, brings us a little closer to significant victories … victories that can offer some comfort to the souls of those we have lost in battle, who are waiting to rest in peace.

We are aware of the magnitude of the task. We are learning from the failures of our elders. We know the many threats we face. The odds are not in our favour. Perhaps we will not turn the tide, become that tsunami.

But as a Catalan friend once said: there are times when not to take risks is a risk not worth taking.

I had a wonderful time yesterday talking to folks at the @fediforum book launch event for Move Slowly and Build Bridges! It was especially fun to see folks who were interviewed for the book!

As usual, I want to share the text of my talk as well as the slides. You can see them here:
robertwgehl.org/presentations/
robertwgehl.org/presentations/

The latter has alt text for images, and there's a "presenter view" if you want to see the text and slides together. (Marp ftw).

I do not know how this website works but I hope we can say our beliefs that jokes are fun to tell with our friends and Nazis are bad and the people allowing Nazis to attack and kill us and our friends and OUR CHILDREN should be both stopped and replaced by idk communism 😊

Hello I am very angry to be here 😊 after getting my good true jokes published by The Federalist, I, like many of our trans leftist peers, have now been literally suspended from bsky for literally saying "rest in piss Charlie Kirk." To be fair I also said a bunch of very funny true things that I will happily read on the stand at the Hague 2 with my lips DIRECTLY on the MIC

The new CBS might not quite be state media, but it’s certainly going to be state-supervised media.

Congratulations to Kenneth Weinstein on the title, but the real bias ombudsman is Donald Trump.

Violent right wing extremists are angry at Donald Trump and Charlie Kirk because they have not immediately created death camps and started executing millions of people.

There's a long record of ultra-right people committing or threatening violence against their own side.

Mitt Romney has explicitly says that fear of being killed by the far-right motivates many elite Republicans. msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/m

the party that's been wink-nodding political violence against their opponents my entire life cannot credibly demand a special exemption for Charlie Kirk, who himself explicitly said dead schoolchildren were a small price to pay for the 2nd Amendment

sorry! not buying it!

I really <sarcasm>love</sarcasm> how Windows lets me set a date and time for restarting after updates and then completely ignores my instructions and restarts earlier and wipes out work I was doing.

This is one reason I do most of my computing on a Linux machine...

I've always thought "I have never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure." is a great quote. It's often attributed to Mark Twain, but according to Snopes he never uttered it. snopes.com/fact-check/mark-twa Ah well. I like it anyway, whoever coined it.

Loyalty Tax? Ugh.

Delighted to share with you a brand new version of my video: "Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media" ... with Finnish voice-over narration 🥳

Feeling anxious today because... the state of the world.

One thing that I keep thinking about - to maintain hope - is the cyclical nature of history.

The past decade have felt like a modern version of the Middle Ages (or Dark Ages).

But what followed that? The Renaissance and the Enlightenment. The Age of Reason.

I need to read up on all this to cultivate a positive outlook. To stay hopeful.

Big virtual hug to everyone who's having a hard day.

Hello all. I am very bad at asking for money. I find it very awkward. I have a paid subscription tier on my otherwise free newsletter, but it's not a popular one tbh. But if you have a few spare pennies and would like to support what I do I also have a Ko-fi too. Thank you!

Yes, we should despise Big Tech/Telecom's vile CEOs. But as @pluralistic says in his latest Pluralistic post, first blame the policy monsters -- among them, Robert Bork, Bruce Lehman, and Ajit Pai -- who enabled Tech's vicious and destructive monopolists pluralistic.net/2025/09/10/say
