#Australia Completely Loses The Plot, Plans To Ban Kids From Watching #YouTube - techdirt.com/2025/08/06/austra "The end result will be that Australia has basically taught a generation of teenagers not to trust the government, that their internet regulators are completely out of touch, and that laws are stupid."

I just passed 50,000 followers here -- more than I ever had on Twitter -- and I am hugely grateful to all of you.

I also have at least 10x the genuine engagement here that I ever got on Twitter.

I have just been introduced to Sharon Goldman's AI journalism and it's some of the funniest shit I've seen in my life.

She's really out there prompting ChatGPT to write what reads like Kindle Unlimited-tier softcore erotica and getting paid.

Even her "About" page on LinkedIn has two em-dashes and one --, so like, what's going on here? Local journalist can't write five sentences without an LLM? What are DOING out here?

This just in: my friends chucked out a shitty "CO2" #sensor.

Actually a breathalyzer:

hackaday.com/2023/02/18/anatom

It's a really pretty design! And while the man in the video says it's useless, I actually started a CO2 sensor project this winter, but I didn't have a display or case.
Now I guess I do!

But it turns out driving a matrix of #LCD segments is surprisingly difficult.

Here's a picture of connections. Wish me luck figuring out.

Catching a real world and *unexpected* #Cellbroadcast message revealed some minor bugs in #phosh and its mobile settings but those were easy to spotted and fixes will land for 0.49. Overall #ModemManager, #cbd, and #phosh picked the message up as expected (and the channel setting worked as well):

“What we’re learning is that two of the country's most popular home improvement stores are contributing to the massive surveillance dragnet coordinated by Flock Safety,” putting customers at risk “whether it's cops stalking their exes or aggressive ICE agents targeting yard workers,” EFF’s Dave Maass told @404mediaco.

AWS Deleted all data despite redundancy, backup, dead man’s switch. This is why you need to keep all your data offline. The 3-2-1 backup rule is a good data protection strategy that states that you kee 3 copies of your data, storing them on 2 different types of storage media, and keeping 1 copy offsite under your bed or office. Don't trust your hosting company's backup service.

MAHA just announced that states will be able to prohibit people from purchasing junk food with SNAP.

They claim this will make people healthier.

That it’ll force them to make better choices. It won’t.

Why? They aren’t addressing the privilege involved with healthy eating

I’m all for a healthy diet. I only consume whole and unprocessed foods myself, and even did a year as a raw vegan to try and reduce my overall inflammation.

It was an eye opening experience that I was only able to do because of my privilege.

In a perfect world, we would all be eating the healthiest and most nutrient dense food available.

But we don’t live in a perfect world.

Whole foods are more expensive, take longer to prepare and require more effort than “junk food”

People who are disabled, elderly, living in poverty and/or food deserts sometimes have no other choice.

Fed is better than dead.

This latest restriction will result in people going hungry. Kids starving because their parents can’t make them a healthy meal.

You can’t cut off an entire category of food without addressing the various systemic barriers to healthy eating.

There needs to be a plan to lower the cost of fresh whole foods. They need to be made more available, cheaper and in easy to prepare options.

People need a basic living wage to ensure they have the time to shop, prep and cook.

If you’re working two full time jobs just to survive; you can’t possibly be cooking from scratch every day.

Even if all those goals were accomplished, there are still people who rely on junk food for survival.

There are still people who may want it as an occasional treat.

Banning it altogether sends a message that poor & disabled people don’t “deserve” treats.

This isn’t about making people healthier. It’s about blaming them for their illnesses.

If we blame diet and lifestyle, we can feel better about not treating people when they get sick.

It’s eugenics and it’s on full display.

There are so many better ways to encourage people to eat healthier.

We should have universal healthcare, a basic income, childcare and affordable housing.

If basic needs are met, healthy living becomes much easier.

Finally, disability is no one’s fault.

Healthy living can help, but you can’t wellness your way out of chronic illness.

It doesn’t work that way, and the only reason to convince people otherwise is a desire to label disabled people expendable.

We are not expendable.

@redezem @lkanies I was recording a podcast episode yesterday with a programmer named Efron Licht, and I said "I don't get as much time to study programming as I'd like", and he said "That's because you're an executive now"

Now I'm having a dark night of the soul

At least 21 people in Florida are sick with ecoli and Campylobacter from drinking raw milk.

6 are younger than 10

7 are in the hospital

Raw milk is not healthy. It’s not safe. It’s a not a miracle cure for chronic illness.

Pasteurization was an incredible scientific advancement that saved lives.

These are serious illnesses that can kill or leave you disabled

Don’t fall for the grift and don’t drink raw milk
