Leading the charge: how a drive for electric vehicles is cleaning up #Nepal - theguardian.com/global-develop "With air pollution causing a fifth of deaths in Nepal, growing EV use could add nearly three years to #Kathmandu residents’ lives" excellent news

I'd like to understand how Android handles some QMI bits and found tooling by @joelselvaraj for that on the @postmarketOS wiki (wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Qua). That needs a patched Android kernel, so I took some notes how I got that to work on a Pixel 3a. Just in case this is useful to others: honk.sigxcpu.org/con/Booting_a

Of course Elsevier's "enhanced pdf viewer" tracks where you click, view, if you hide the page, etc. and then transmits a big base64 blob of events along with ID from University proxy when you leave. I'm sure straight to SciVal for sale.
Is this the way we want science to work?

“Just press and hold the buttons on both sides. Remember that. Try it now. Don’t just memorize it, internalize it, so that you’ll be able to do it without much thought while under duress, like if you’re confronted by a police officer. Remember to do this every time you’re separated from your phone, like when going through the magnetometer at any security checkpoint, especially airports. As soon as you see a metal detector ahead of you, you should think, ‘Hard-lock my iPhone.’”

In one respect -- and in only one respect -- this whole tariff thing is an unintentionally brilliant maneuver (absolutely unintentionally) because it's so fucking insane it's forcing even diehard leftists to explain how Trump is doing Capitalism wrong. It's almost like the Overton window got pushed so far to the right the left has to move right just to start the conversation about moving left.

If any of you want to do just one thing to make your life better - and improve the world - here's a very very simple thing you can do (and encourage your friends)... maybe, like me, some of you already do heaps of it... great, it appears you're on the right track: yewtu.be/watch?v=BV2PQjXbtXA or youtube.com/watch?v=BV2PQjXbtX

Feeling some serious Weltschmertz today. Especially for the folks who're so busy scraping by that they don't even know what's going in the world - they won't have the chance to 'brace themselves' before the wave hits them. I encourage everyone to do what they can to protect & insulate themselves and those around them.

Congress is pushing website-blocking bills that would let private companies erase sites from the internet—based on nothing but a hollow promise not to abuse this new power. eff.org/deeplinks/2025/04/cong

I heard Trabant, the crown jewel of nationalist economic protectionism, is planning to start heavily subsidised automotive manufacturing again, but this time, in the US. I look forward to a time when USians eagerly await, sometimes for years, the delivery of their 'legendary' Trabant, the storied pinnacle of 80s eastern European automotive technology.

“For more than two decades, surveillance towers at the border have proven to be a boondoggle, and adding AI isn’t going to make it any less of a boondoggle — it will just be an AI-powered boondoggle,” EFF’s Dave Maass told @theintercept. theintercept.com/2025/04/03/go

From the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker:

Rep. Ronny Jackson of Texas introduced a bill March 27 that would strip all government funding for NPR and PBS, a move that the public broadcasters say would lead to the closure of hundreds of local radio and television stations nationwide:

Now that the Repubs are in charge of the intelligence agencies, maybe people will finally start taking Yasha seriously.
