#Journalism is hard.

Publishing a #newspaper is even harder.

We don't get everything right @thegazettecoop.

But the one thing we do well? We listen.

Every complaint, every comment, every suggestion – it makes the newspaper stronger. That's the beauty of being a #coop.

We might not have the capacity to cover every story. But the stories we do publish have the community at the heart of them. We stepped up to hold power to account, when no-one else was willing.

Onwards and upwards.

@lightweight @dangillmor I would totally go for Discourse to replace Facebook Groups. Another great option in my opinion is to create a community in a Lemmy server or to host a server.

Donald #Trump would have been convicted over 2020 election, says special counsel - theguardian.com/us-news/2025/j staggering; definitive proof that the US political system has failed

Such epic scumbaggery from people spreading misinformation about wildfires and the people fighting them.

I want to publicly announce a change in my thinking. For many years I have promoted non-profits, especially foundations as a good way to keep FOSS (Free and Open Source) projects protected and effective.

Not any more.

I am now leaning towards coops as the better vehicle. The cooperative approach allows for better distribution of power to those that do the work where foundations typically concentrate power on those with the money. This might become a long thread that'll take some time.

Feeling quite pleased with myself. My coffee roaster has not been working right - not reaching temperature and taking too long to roast the beans, which gives a poor result.

I researched the problem. Found some helpful tips. Diagnosed the problem, ordered the part, took the roaster apart, verified the old part was indeed broken, replaced it, put everything back together. And now it's all working! So I spent $45 and an $800 appliance probably has another decade in it now.

We should applaud manufacturers like Behmor who publish manuals, answer owner questions, design things to be repairable and provide parts.

#Ransomware threat actors are increasingly abusing AWS's Server-Side Encryption (SSE-C) to encrypt S3 buckets without needing to drop malware. Most recently a TA known as #Codefinger is using this technique.

🕵 Make sure you're monitoring S3 and encryption activity via CloudTrail & GuardDuty.

So, this has been in the works for a while, arguably most of last year. I intend to transfer my personal ownership of the Mastodon trademarks and assets, incl. copyright over my code, to the Mastodon non-profit, and transition to a different role at the organization.

Another major media commentator quits the Trump-nuzzling Washington Post to start a site on a platform whose key investors are outright Trump funders, and whose management sees no problem helping fascists monetize their vile stuff.

You absolutely must read today's (forgive the expression) incendiary blog post by @pluralistic -- "They Were Warned"

One quote: "It's depressing to see so many comrades in the fight against Big Tech getting suckered into carrying water for Zuck, demanding the eradication of CDA 230."

So far "A History of Equality" has been excellent.

One interesting idea floated by Pikkety is having a "universal inheritance" on top of a universal income.

Everyone, at a certain age (he suggests 25) gets a lump sum of money equal to say 60% of the average inheritance. This would be a sizeable amount for most people, and would facilitate people buying homes and being able to negotiate better wages.

He suggests funding this by taxing the wealthiest inheritances in particular.

I"m continually disappointed by their annoyance at having someone point out that it's very hard to fight something if you totally depend on them for your weapons.

It's like picking guns for your revolution that only fire bullets made by gov't run ammunition factories. You're not going to get very far.

Luckily, we've got other digital weapons that don't belong to our class enemies. We just need to have the commitment to our principles to actually go to the effort of using them.

Back in the old days, when the US government pursued an anti-trust case against the Microsoft Corporation, every single court document written by the prosecution.. was authored in MS Word. The figures were displayed in MS Excel spreadsheets. Interestingly, despite the fact that MS was found to be abusing its monopolies in many ways on a massive scale, MS was never penalised in any useful way, and nothing was ever done to break their monopolies. 1/n

Great news everyone! I open the grifter playbook and talk about all the people that now try to sell me time with your boss' boss' boss and why they keep buying trash software.

It appears that melting Antarctic sheets may result in larger volcanic eruptions This is due to the unloading of ice mass shifting pressure across vast chambers of magma.

"The researchers note that even if anthropogenic warming ceased immediately, the effects of ice mass unloading that the West Antarctic Rift System has already experienced will still affect volcanic behavior here for thousands of years to come."
