If I followed my heart, I would be dedicating my free time to building more resilient food systems, or working to actively grow our neighborhood mutual aid system, or fighting for various important changes in my city and state. But all of that takes energy. My supply of energy is limited. And meanwhile, we've lost federal protections for reproductive freedom, trans people are unable to get the health care they need, and voting rights are being degraded.
@dynamic I'm sorry, but as someone who was heavily involved in Occupy and remembers quite well the Federally coordinated multi-state crackdown, I feel compelled to remind you that it was not the Bush admin's DHS that led the charge to break up the encampments and bash in heads, but the Obama admin's. Bush was not in office, and to pretend like he was somehow was still calling shots at DHS in 2011 is...strange. Bush has plenty of blood on his hands, but Obama has to own that one...just sayin'.
The really big changes---working toward mutual care, dismantling capitalism, learning to work in partnership with the more-than-human world rather than treating it as something to exploit---these will never be delivered by governments that are responsive to business interests or the desires of the hyperwealthy. And yet, that's what governments do, with the U.S. government more guilty than most.
@GossiTheDog #Windows and #Microsoft products are thus not suitable for use in #school. Our #education system should be free of #surveillance tech.
We should not be normalising this kind of dangerous #spyware by teaching kids that this is normal.

The waters are receding in Porto Alegre and the massive undertaking of cleaning the mess left behind by the floods has begun. Some of our comrades have been able to return to their squats and begin assessing the damage.
Donations have already been used to buy protective gear; like goggles, gloves and rubber boots, to protect those cleaning up the wreckage from diseases often associated with floodwaters like leptospirosis.
Comrades have also purchased a pressure washer to share freely with those within their communities and power inverters to help the indigenous Mbya Guarani community, who are reclaiming their lands in the south of Porto Alegre, rebuild their solar power system. As we take stock of the extensive damage, we have decided to raise our fundraising goal to $7500 CAD.
We’d like to say our special thanks to those who have already donated, shared and showed solidarity. Your donations have already made a significant effect for the Anarchist and Indigenous communities in the lands in southern so-called Brazil.

Much of what you need to know to understand the current dysfunction in the US (and other parts of the world too, I'm sure).
Someone needs to explain to the old farts that "work ethic" is relative to employee perception of worth. I hear too many Boomer/GenX adults complaining about the younger kids not doing their jobs, when the real problem is that the employers and the governments aren't doing theirs; Employers/governments have one job: take care of your people. Note: (for all those who can't follow) this means don't exploit your people.

With all the Microsoft Recall stuff saturating the Fediverse right now (my feed at least)... It seems a good time to remember that Microsoft has always had form as an unethical organisation... I commemd to you this detailed (and enjoyable) account of their first decade or so: https://web.archive.org/web/20051013072349/http://www.vanwensveen.nl/rants/microsoft/IhateMS_1.html
I got ahold of the Copilot+ software.
Recall uses a bunch of services themed CAP - Core AI Platform. Enabled by default.
It spits constant screenshots (the product brands then “snapshots”, but they’re hooked screenshots) into the current user’s AppData as part of image storage.
The NPU processes them and extracts text, into a database file.
The database is SQLite, and you can access it as the user including programmatically. It 100% does not need physical access and can be stolen.
“Most people are not aware of the resource usage underlying ChatGPT,” Ren said. “If you’re not aware of the resource usage, then there’s no way that we can help conserve the resources.”
In July 2022, the month before OpenAI says it completed its training of GPT-4, Microsoft pumped in about 11.5 million gallons of water to its cluster of Iowa data centers, according to the West Des Moines Water Works. That amounted to about 6% of all the water used in the district, which also supplies drinking water to the city’s residents.
