Prosecutors have an expression for the rampant fraud enabled by Walmart's crappy security practices and loathing of consumer-protection regulations: "The Walmart scheme".
@ProPublica reports on an ongoing scandal.
Bottom line: Do NOT buy gift cards from Walmart. And if you have them, don't fall for scammers' tricks.
I'm about to retire (again...) in a few weeks. I'm looking out for opportunities to give back. I'm interested in either speaking/teaching/workshops (very willing to travel) or any #OpenSource or #NonProfit groups that would like some UX help. I'd appreciate a boost!
One year ago today on January 18, 2023, Tortuguita–Manuel Esteban Paez Terán–was murdered by Atlanta cops.
In honor of Tort and to #StopCopCity, support the Atlanta Solidarity Fund @AtlSolFund if you can http://atlsolidarity.org.

Once again, Teen Vogue is the place to go for quality political analysis. NYT and WaPo need to take some notes.

The situation, and Apple's remedy, are just another reminder that you may think you own what you bought. But if the seller can downgrade it without your permission, you don't really own it.

The problem is that we are currently in an information disruption.
A similar thing happened with the invention of the printing press. Suddenly people were bombarded with an enormous amount of material and they had no way of evaluating the reliability.
The printing press launched religious wars. That's when blood libel took off.
The Internet and the rise of cable news has done the same.

The authors are political science professors at Stony Brook.
Their point: The biggest divide isn’t by party.
The biggest divided is by involvement in politics.
The most vocal voices from social media, who are amplified by the mainstream media, come from a relatively small group.
Echoing what Dannagal Young had to say in “Wrong: How Media, Politics, and Identity Drive our Appetite for Misinformation, the authors talk about two sets of relatively small groups of hyper-engaged partisans.

Does anybody have experience or expertise with the European Cooperative Society (SCE) legal form?
We're exploring options for a legal entity for @karrot and potentially it fits, but it's really useful to chat to people with more direct experience/knowledge. Boosts appreciated.
Awful ruling upholding Indiana’s law against recording police within 25 feet. Similar laws have been ruled unconstitutional elsewhere because recording cops is an established First Amendment right.
The IN lawmaker behind the law reportedly said citizens like those who recorded George Floyd’s murder were “involved in a situation that’s none of their business.” That tells you all you need to know. https://thedissenter.org/us-judge-rules-in-favor-of-police-buffer-law-viewed-as-threat-to-rights-of-journalists/?ref=the-dissenter-newsletter

"Worker control goes against the grain and questions the logic of capital. It teaches society that workers not only produce value, but can also run a factory. Here, at Indorca, we have collectively identified five obstacles shared by all worker-run enterprises..." ~Jose Cedeño, Indorca
