I always wonder why tech writers *never* state this explicitly. They only ever imply it, leaving it as something only informed technologists can work out.

The "Effective altruism" movement misses the point. The problem with philanthropy isn't the way it's targeted. It's the fact that some people have more money than whole states to spend on their idea of doing good. So the fix isn't to make philanthropy more "effective", but to make it more democratic.

Microsoft creates byzantine systems that are pointlessly complex. The purpose of that complexity - against all engineering practice - is not technical, it's entirely human: to keep legions of IT techs employed & insisting on their employers persisting with Microsoft (because most of those legions are sharp enough to know that without MS, they'd be unemployed). Most* of the rest of the world carries the cost and daily pain.

Wow, got an email from a customer who's no longer getting password recovery emails from a #libre web app I run for them. Turns out Microsoft has randomly turned off the (non-auth) SMTP service they were using to send the emails (rather than an authenticating account, as that incurs a license fee). Part of an unannounced 'security initiative', apparently.

I feel nothing but pity for people who, though no fault of their own, have Microsoft corporation software foisted upon them. Poor sods.

The weird issue with my vision is better this morning. Currently text on LCD screens look like slightly out of sync text on old CRT monitors - you know, they're shiny and not out of focus, exactly, but uncomfortably distorted and way too bright. So I reached into an old bag of tricks from the 90s and wore prescription sunglasses. Much better. Now I can log in to work!

But I was sick all weekend, so I'm unshaven and ungroomed. It looks like Hell's Angels' accountant has joined the meeting.

Frankly, I don't care if the "Big Names" of social media bypass Mastodon. What I care about are the poets, sports fans, community activists, academics, nerds, geeks, anime fans, old movie buffs, music fans, philosophers, environmentalists, photographers, bloggers, cat people, dog people, hosers, bloggers, sci-fi freaks, astronomers,biologists, and the marginalized souls that can't find a haven anywhere else. I want authentic egagement with real people.

OK, while I am legit on the mend from the flu a somewhat disturbing after affect is that looking at anything on a computer screen is shimmery and slightly blurred. This was NOT something that was an issue on Friday and is something I can't get away from today. Doesn't matter how near or far I am from the screen -- any screen -- text looks slightly out of focus.
