“There is nothing to prevent the Press of this or any other country from coming under the financial control of armament makers, international traffickers in drugs, wealthy men who desire the perpetuation of the slum, aliens, or the worst type of market-rigging financier… save public opinion, which is itself hamstrung by the passing of the Independent Press. And if such a Press do not emerge from behind the smoke screen and the poison… then Democracy will have the newspapers it deserves.” [1928]

Pretty sure that on NPR (WGBH) this evening when talking about the diplomatic meeting between Russia and China that the newscaster said something about relations between "the two Communist countries", and I'm so confused.

Sounds like Microsoft #EEE - Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. MS wants our phone number or other mobile device data. The instructions give no explanation of TOTP except how to choose a gui and click on it.

I guess #GiveUpGitHub may accelerate, like #BirdSiteMigration .

A few months to migrate any remaining repositories to #Codeberg should be enough.

Dear devs,

It's NEVER ok to create accounts for a webapp that require an email address, unless you validate that address first.😡

Every week, I get someone signing up for some kind of site with my email address without my consent.

And most of those sites make it difficult if not nearly impossible to stop their transactional #email.

This comprehensive, clear and useful graph made it into today's IPCC synthesis report. Kudos to Ecofys co-founder, TU Delft professor, and friend Kornelis Blok!

The Republican Party's war on voting (for Democrats) escalates across many fronts, but Big Journalism deigns to notice only sporadically -- doing business as usual in the face of the imminent threat. democracydocket.com/news-alert

Again, @molly0xfff nails it:

"Faced with the choice between the more communal, cooperative choice and the self-serving, every-man-for-himself choice destined to end in a bank run, it should be no surprise which option [the venture capitalists] picked. As the Titanic sank, they were the ones pushing people out of the lifeboats."

Nate Silver's brain seems to be broken. The "data guy" is literally citing a Twitter poll as if it's meaningful in a political context.

No wonder ABC News is trying to sell off FiveThirtyEight.

Cory @doctorow is appropriately livid about the way Big Telecom and Rupert Murdoch's minions slimed Gigi Sohn, lying relentlessly about her and her policy beliefs, to successfully keep from becoming an FCC commissioner. The Internet -- all of us -- lost hugely as a result.

I have a theory that people with a 'liberal' outlook are better able to imagine themselves into the position of other people than 'conservatives'. And I wonder if that ability hinges on reading books (esp speculative fiction). I wonder about the correlation of political leaning for avid scifi readers (for instance). Similarly I wonder that about those who don't read books (a substantial majority of adults, I'm led to understand). Anyone know of credible research in this area?
