"But many ancient Aboriginal sites have no national heritage listing. For the recently destroyed Juurkan gorge, the true archaeological significance was uncovered after consent had been issued and there were no provisions to reverse or amend the decision once this new information was discovered.
... For the rock shelters in the Western Pilbara, Rio Tinto was abiding by Western Australia's Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972..."

@lightweight I have dedicated a great deal of time over the last year learning more about two important social technologies that build better democratic practicies - Sociocracy 3.0 and Nonviolent Communication. (it was you mention of Sociocracy 3.0 that got me started down that path, Dave.) Both are needs centric and non-adversarilial. Both support the needs of all and are inclusive of different pov's. One intriguing ideal comming out of sociocracy is "Bottomocracy".
What a disgrace the "nonprofit" College Board has made of itself -- "strips down" the Advanced Placement program in African American Studies to satisfy racist critics. (AP courses are a BILLION-dollar revenue item for this outfit...)

"By using digital surveillance to enforce rules, we focus our attention on an apparent order that allows us to ignore the real problems in the industry ... But under the actual order, the problem in trucking is that drivers are incentivized to work themselves ... to death."

This thread is already too long for me to wade too deep into the LAPD's sewage in this period - and we are far from done - but Parker's tenure and his odious dick proclivities have been exhaustively documented by actual no-shit historians and the LA newspaper-of-record The Los Angeles Times packaged up a bunch of their research with its own in this handy newspaper feature article.

During the press conference, Mayor Dickens and other officials made no mention of Manuel “Tortuguita” Terán, the Indigenous forest defender killed by police almost two weeks ago. Learn more about Terán here: https://youtu.be/N1vYNNhZRDw

I always say that democracy is the least-worst form of government we know about, by far... but I'm always on the lookout for something better, because democracy still sucks in lots of ways. This is an interesting tweak of democracy: https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/sunday/audio/2018875527/adam-cronkright-using-a-lottery-to-pick-politicians

They say that student privacy is a concern.

The most depressing thing, though, is that it's these folks who are engaging with government on technology. It's pains me deeply. They're not looking at any big pictures, they're only looking at their own business interests. Which, in most cases, are trying to emulate 'big tech'. Little real ambition, little consideration of what's best for our society. And, of course, they think that the only way to do tech is the 'Silicon Valley' way. Proprietary to the hilt. It's just depressing.

US BANK AND WELLS FARGO SMASHED FOR TORTUGUITA AND TYRE NICHOLS
"Militants tagged bank windows with “defend the forest”, “fuck 12”, “eat shit Frey” and “rest in peace Tortuguita and Tyre Nichols”.
Our message of solidarity extends past written words to the shattered windows and broken ATMs in our wake.
We appreciate the work of the bloc tonight in Minneapolis. Drawing the attention of and keeping distracted an entire city’s pig department is no easy task in these freezing temperatures. Your bravery is radiant.

“The Economic Policy Institute estimates that more than $50 billion in wages are stolen from workers per year. The amount of money stolen from workers by their employers exceeds the value of stolen goods in all property crimes combined, according to the latest FBI statistics.”
If your trusted news source spent lots of time on shoplifting last year and none on wage theft, ask yourself why.
