Fascinating history of polio from the Infectious Diseases and Therapy article (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/):
"Before the twentieth century, poor hygiene and sanitation meant that almost all children were exposed to polio virus during infancy, which enabled natural immunity to build up in populations. The industrial revolution brought great sanitary improvements[, but] it reduced childhood exposure to the virus..., creating the perfect setting for epidemics to ignite [3]."

A reminder that the Daily Mail is a toxic waste dump of journalism -- vile, vile people at an outlet you should never, ever cite as proof of anything. (I immediately unfollow any account that treats the Mail as legitimate journalism.) mastodon.social/@rvawonk@newsi

If you're looking for work in IT, and a prospective employer tells you, confidently, that they're a "Microsoft Shop" they've got really bad governance and I'm confident they'll cause you more pain than they're worth if you work for them. Here's what I mean: davelane.nz/mshostage

Decades of research prove that the best way to end homelessness is...

Give people a home. Seriously. That's it. No strings, no prerequisites, no faith-based, holistic, means-tested, yoga-cebtric meditation parole. Just a home.

Scratch a Libertarian, find an Authoritarian whose beef is that they're not in charge of everything.

"Erasure of history is not a secret. There are 2.8 million students sitting in Florida public schools right now knowing that their governor does not want them to learn about Black history"

A true open standard (see openstandards.nz/definition) allows for *permissionless innovation*. Literally anyone can both study the open standard in its entirety, and implement it without fear of patent extortion or the need to pay up front or have profit drained by royalties.

The fact you're looking at this on an ActivityPub-enabled Fediverse app demonstrates that a community of focused individuals can create a global-scale network around an open standard that rivals (or, frankly, beats) pretty much anything capitalism could create, even at its 'best'.

And these communities create without profit motive - just because they share a vision and think it'd be a good thing. All they require is sustainability, not exploitative profit.

I think that's worth celebrating.

With these 'big tech' corporate lay offs, I encourage those who're unexpectedly back in the job market to consider the power dynamics & lacking ethics of the previous employers they chose to work for and look out for (and avoid) new role in similar circumstances (that's likely to have the same ultimate outcome).

The options with more principled, ethical management (perhaps even non-profits & foundations) might not pay as well, but the peace of mind might easily be worth the difference.

Obscene wealth should be a source of shame and contrition rather than inspiring bravado and a sense of worthiness & superiority.

Kevin McCarthy just officially put COVID conspiracy theorist Marjorie Taylor Greene on the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Greene was previously banned from Twitter for spreading COVID disinformation and continues to spread lies about the pandemic to this day.

Seeing all these posts about MS365 being shit...DOS crashed a lot, Windows has always had a shit UI, MS Word is the worst document tool I've ever used, MS Excel couldn't compete when there was competition, did anyone really think Visual Basic was a serious programming language?, Visual Studio is shit for anything but Windows programming, ...

When you primarily pursue anti-competitive behavior, there is little left for quality.

Some people in NYC hacked a programmable road sign to display their own messages. Want to do this yourself? It’s surprisingly easy!

NYPD to ticket homeless people $50-$250 and jail time:
"The summonses require the payment of the fine. If not paid, a bench warrant would be issued for the violator, who be hauled into court and potentially jailed if he or she could not pay."

Anyone ready to talk about other metrics than memory safety yet? Software metrics in general? How we prove we're using the best programming paradigm for the job? Bueller? Bueller?
