This is great: https://theconversation.com/corbevax-a-new-patent-free-covid-19-vaccine-could-be-a-pandemic-game-changer-globally-174672 but it's desperately sad that this isn't the default process, for the greater good, rather than Big Pharma shareholder (i.e. the 1%) profit maximisation.
@vbd It feels counterintuitive, right? Seeds have been a common good for millennia, and should continue to be commons.
https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/460646/horrifying-statistics-show-abuse-complaints-laid-against-1-in-7-catholic-clergy-working-for-a-bishop I think we need to accept that theistic religion in general has less than zero claim to moral authority, and it's had at least 2k years to prove its value, which it has not done. I think it's better if we let it lapse.
And I'm responsible for about 30 Linux instances in the cloud, and about 7 or 8 at home. And a bunch of other stuff (see https://tech.oeru.org/oeru-web-services-february-2021 and https://nzoss.nz/online-services plus my personal services (dev and prod))... so, keeps me busy :) - but still have time for development and lots of other fulfilling (e.g. family & friends) aspects of life.
Wow, just wrote a list of the WordPress sites I'm responsible for... and it's about 15, of which 7 or so are multisites with as many as 200 subsites. And I've just been through them all to make sure they're up-to-date. Takes an hour or so a month. I think lots of people think self-hosting is way more bother than it really is.
ICYMI: The OECD says it would cost US$50 billion to vaccinate the entire rest of the world.
G-20 countries have already spent US$10 trillion to mitigate the economic impact of #COVID19.
Roderic Crooks from UC-Irvine:
"[N]aïve or cynical deployments of computing #technology can actually harm or exploit the very same racialized and minoritized communities that access is supposed to benefit. In short, access to computing in #education —or in any other domain— can only meaningfully contribute to #equality when minoritized and racialized communities are allowed to pursue their own collective goals."
RIP #Wordle. Capitalism does all it can to ruin everything nice.

Both NZ's Labour and National Parties still espouse policies that implicitly assume that "Trickle Down Economics" is a thing. We need Governments and policy makers that realise that TDE is not valid and won't improve the equity of our society (a per-requisite to addressing the climate emergency). We need smarter *progressive* Government.

"To take over central banks and make them issue digital currencies on a distributed ledger that makes basic income possible. To take over governments and implement personal ownership of our data. In short, no algorithm will remove the need for a genuine revolution." - Yanis Varoufakis 2/2
Wow: "In the name of liberating us from moguls, states, and even climate change, crypto zealots are turbocharging the ideology of commodification (i.e. neoliberalism). What should we do? The only thing that will work is: To take over parliaments so as to legislate a corporate law that ends tradeable shares, and introduces the one-share-one-employee principle in its stead...." 1/2
And this (which someone linked to earlier today in my stream) is fascinating in a similar vein: https://the-crypto-syllabus.com/yanis-varoufakis-on-techno-feudalism/

this is one of the many things I mean when I say "copyright as a concept is irredeemably bad". small creators can't afford to spend the time pursuing valid copyright complaints, but huge corps can use the mere threat of invalid ones to quash fully legal creative works
