One of my favorite things about the scholar.social instance is that when I come here with a question, I almost always get an answer. I never feel like I'm shouting into the void.

It's one of many vibrant communities I'm grateful to be a part of online.

I spent some time reflecting on what makes the online spaces I enjoy work.

Here's what I came up with: eleanorkonik.com/consideration

The rise in remote work has led to an increase in companies using electronic monitoring software, reports the @latimes. Here’s their primer on the rise of bossware: latimes.com/politics/story/202

A powerful Nature Sustainability article building on #DoughnutEconomics that shows how no country in the world has met minimum social thresholds while remaining within #PlanetaryBoundaries.

The front runner is Costa Rica.

We found a high severity vulnerability in Synapse and plan to release a fix in Synapse 1.47.1 on Tuesday 23rd November.

If you run a Synapse instance, please be prepared to upgrade as soon as the patched version is released.

Even 30 years after being introduced to C, I still occasionally trip over the abomination known as zero-based numbering (re. arrays). It's a logical-physical confusion based upon memory offsets, which leads to stating, "the first item is the zeroth item.", which sounds entirely nonsensical even when you know it means, "the first item is at the zeroth offset from the memory location referenced."

The compiler is supposed to hide such things from us humans.

That last outburst was triggered by this: rnz.co.nz/news/national/456080 I'm appalled that NZ signed up for the TPPA in any form. What a completely wrong-thinking piece of shit.

The things our politicians (and, dutifully, our media) refer to as "Free Trade Agreements" (FTAs) have nothing to do with 'freeing' trade. They consist of hundreds or thousands of pages of *new* trade restrictions. They the antithesis of "FTAs". And, as ever, they exist not to benefit the government's constituents, they exist to benefit corporate interests, based entirely on an implicit (but entirely wrong) belief in "trickle down economics". Which, for those who missed the memo, is not a thing.

Further disappointing but not surprising to see the rather toothless "Copenhagen Pledge" coming out of this event at techfordemocracy.dk/join-the-i that has a lot of warm fuzzy words, but doesn't actually bother to say what kinds of technology are encouraged or discouraged.

Kind of like "be excellent to each other" codes of conduct that don't define bad behavior.

Stark contrast to good work like the "Declaration of #DigitalAutonomy" developed by @o0karen0o @mdb and others.

At Denmark's "Tech for #Democracy" event tomorrow, both #Twitter and #Facebook have been invited to teach policy makers what needs to happen for more #freedom on the #Internet.

For all my gripes about the brokenness of the international development system, today's a good day. I was fortunate to be able to lead a workshop of 30+ people working at funding agencies/donors. Coming out of #COP26 discussing how to band together to make progress on #climate action using technology -- hopefully in responsible & ethical ways.

Lots of good lightning talks and productive breakout groups discussing how to build partnerships & synergy to respond to the giant challenges ahead.

Chatty 5.0~beta is out!

This is the first Chatty released with integrated MMS support!

I'd appreciate some time chatting with someone who thinks that licenses inspired by open source licenses, but with restrictions on use (e.g do no evil licenses) are the best and most effective way to handle people doing evil things with software.

It's great to see a few gov'ts (e.g. the EU) starting to realise how much they've undermined their own sovereignty and stunted their local industries by adopting Microsoft (and, to a lesser extent, Google/Amazon/Apple/Facebook) software and services. They've only just started to realise that they've outsourced their most business-critical systems to a potentially hostile party, and in doing so, they've condemned their institutions, and the people dependent on them, to exploitation.

Anybody know any #WorkerCoop developers/TA providers in South Carolina? Going to be talking with some members of a nascent intermodal trucking co-op later today and looking for some ppl in their area to direct them to.

Has anyone seen this documentary? Sounds pretty interesting.

"Solidarity Economy is a portrait of a small forgotten town in the mountains of the Northern part of the State of Veracruz, Where they decided to create their own economic system by printing their own community currency; a coin that is based on the exchange system, initiating this way, an autonomous project with its own resources, detached from Government hands and crosscurrent to the capitalist system."
