Really mad about this Linux kernel - academic research kerfuffle. See: lore.kernel.org/linux-nfs/YH%2

TL;DR: researchers at UMN introduced patches to Linux kernel that contained known-buggy code TO WRITE A PAPER and the UMN IRB didn't consider it human subjects research :blobangery:

Wtaf were these researchers thinking? How did the IRB not consider this human subjects resaerch? How did someone think this was an ethical thing to do?

The software engineering research community has a problem with (lack of) ethic approval culture when experimenting on free/open source software developers.

I don't think there's much hugely controversial in this essay, but I do think it's worth a read, as a reminder to keep things in perspective. Alternative agriculture has tendencies toward solutionism that parallel conventional / ecomodern solutionism.

Snow in April is rare, but not unheard of in this climate. Of course, we aren't in the same climate as we were 40 years ago. According to the birds, we are 200 miles further south, but we seem more exposed to Arctic air currents.

#ShowerThoughts Both philosophically and technically, federation is the middle ground between "the centre should have total authority and control over the edges" (authoritarianism), and "there should be no centre, only edges" (individualism or egoism). The essence of federation is that its useful to have centres, but power ought to reside mostly at the edges.
