9) The whole reputation of Debian suddenly disappear. Canonical announce a hard and definitive fork from it for a 100% Snap distribution.
10) Debian is dead, long live Debian.
The bad news is that the best time to prevent this was during the LLM-use vote.
The good news is that the second best-time to prevent all of this is right now.
I still trust you Debian, do the right thing!
❤️
As I predicted in https://ploum.net/2026-10-01-pascal_wager.html , no taking a strong stance against the use of LLM in your project is exactly the same as taking a strong "use LLM everywhere" stance.
There’s no middle ground.
#Debian
is demonstrating this more quickly that I even envisioned by now forcing packagers that upload to NEW to receive an LLM feedback about their work.

You can still "opt-out" but for how long?
All of this is so predictable and preventable…

as i have said numerous times:
when faced against fascists, you are either for or against fascism. there is no middle ground.
right now the Democratic Party has a fascist middle ground problem. and these wannabe fascists-lite get away with it because thanks to racism.
remember what Toni Morrison said about the twin hydra of fascism and racism?
30 years ago fascist democrats hid behind Mass Incarceration & The War On Drugs. today it’s zionism and genocidal, ethnonationalist racism.

If you want to avoid FOSS which uses GenAI/LLMs, there's a guide called "AI-free FOSS Alternatives" at:
It's heavy on technical terms and detail, so it's good for comparing different projects and navigating least-worst options, but does require some prior tech knowledge to understand.
It also has a section listing reasons why LLMs are problematic:

I don't think being bombarded with noise is a requirement for being leftist.
Quiet spaces are not fascist. Quiet spaces are what some people need. Wanting to hear birds instead of techno and screaming doesn't make someone right-wing.
The key is building communities where the kids can run around laughing in parks and playgrounds, and people can dance and sing, but people who want to hear themselves think also have a place or two.
We don't all have the same needs. We don't all crave crowds of people around us. In a just world, housing would have good soundproofing and there would be enough third spaces that a few quiet ones wouldn't be depriving the loud people of their community.
The US AI bubble might not have collapsed yet, but in South Africa we're more efficient and ours collapsed this weekend. Truly Africa is the future. (To be fair, the South African one was also more advanced in that it didn't actually have any data centres, it was just an MLM painted in AI theming.)
I thought you might enjoy this story.
Also, we learn the Zulu word for a rugpull, which I didn't know because my Zulu is awful.

The state of tech has been dire for many years, and I am not convinced that genAI companies imploding will materially fix the problem. People have not cared about the quality of their work in tech for many years. I would say the decline really began around the start of the Great Recession, although there were issues before that.

How do you even explain this to your grandchildren? Think about it, because you have to explain this to your grandchildren at some point.

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@mjk/117541836725953937
this gets at what I've been trying to articulate for a while: taking the stochastic output of a generator and then filtering it through some mixture of automated tests and your own judgement is a deeply flawed method of making software compared to *constructing* it from things with known properties
“No one paid me to disagree with Jonathan Haidt. It was teenagers who taught me that he was wrong.”
> Cuz here’s the thing… It IS possible to despise the tech companies AND understand why teenagers use their products and find value from doing so. Listen to teenagers; they get these contradictions. Their hatred of the tech companies is growing exponentially even as they use the tools those companies provide. (You should see their attitudes towards AI companies)
I am really tired of the whole ecosystem of "coding would be secured if we educated engineers better" and its sibling "if people could be jailed for releasing insecure code, we would get better code".
We have multiple decades of trying this and the results are empirically not there!
I understand the attraction to these arguments. I understand the reasoning. But these theory are simply disproven by reality.
If all you want is to feel superior and believe in a Just World, sure. I understand.
But if you care about a better world out there for everyone, with better, safer code. Then we need to accept these solutions do not work. And we need a different approach.
I am sorry. I know it is upsetting. But multiple decades with no real impact. At some point, it becomes unethical to still listen to these theories.
@ChrisMayLA6 No, because the involvement of LLMs in the PHP panic was vastly over-hyped. To keep the bubble inflated a little bit longer.
The PHP flaw was extremely difficult (impossible with typical server configurations) to exploit, with or without a pattern-matching bullshit generator.
There have been many more serious vulnerabilities found, and quietly patched, over the years. Software has bugs, this is quite normal.
We should worry much more about unpatched OpenSSL installations, that are both common and relatively easy to exploit.
But the biggest problem we have is "AI" making almost everything on the internet and modern media untrustworthy. The LLM slop is going to take decades to clean up.
Let's see if #getfedihired works:
I'm a SW engineer, I'm very proficient with C++ (25yrs, I'm one of the coauthors of the static reflection feature), Python 20y, Bash 20y, I have quite a lot devops and some webdev experience. I have done team/tech leading and I have also taught at a university for 12 years (OS/Shell, SQL DBs, meta-programming, Linux kernel programming, etc.)
I'm looking for a new IT job, with the above in mind, preferably remote (in GMT+1)
Boosts appreciated
