This week's comic: Decision 2026

To be clear, I applaud the efforts of candidates to go on the offensive and reframe the political conversation around corruption and predatory billionaires. I just remain mystified how so many voters seem drawn to the most obviously unqualified, repulsively corrupt politicians that ever existed.

@drahardja A former coworker, who grew up in the DDR, told me that that was what public life there was like in the last years before the wall fell. Everyone was so used to being propagandised to that most people kinda just assumed that everything was a lie.

In fact, in the regions of the DDR where Western media was available, people were generally *less* west-friendly - because they assumed that Western media was lying to them as well.

I don't understand why our society values speed and innovation so much without any qualifiers defining where this is going and what it's innovating.

Moving fast in which direction?
Breaking which things?
Innovating what?

Going fast in the wrong direction isn't a good thing. Supporting innovations that cause harm, injustices, and inequalities shouldn't be celebrated. What is the end goal here?

We need to demand more than those empty words justifying nothing and leading nowhere.

Otherwise, we might remain oblivious to the fact that they might be leading us to our own demise.

Reading Linux news is increasingly like getting Facebook updates from a family member who joined a cult and subsequently broke off contact

Susan Collins has held office as a corrupt piece of shit for THIRTY YEARS.

She promised to leave decades ago; show her the door.

There is no such thing as "ethically using AI". AI is trained on stolen data. AI is destroying the environment and communities. AI is making us stupid. Use AI if you want, just don't pretend you're doing it in ethical way.

god remember when libreoffice and tuta embarrassed themselves by revealing that their previous anti-AI marketing on here was a lie, then thunderbird stumbled in drunk and went “wait guys don’t forget about me I love uhh whatever it is we’re talking about”

Everyone who runs a website has to update their software now because of OpenAI. They cannot get in the sea quickly enough. Fools

My son told me something worrying about how third level education is hollowing itself out. He was given an assignment, they were to use ai (he refused). The assignment would be written by ai, and the student would check it to make sure the references were real

That's it. No reading skills, no learning, no parsing information, no higher education. Just ask the computer and mark your work done.

We are so screwed if colleges are building a world that can't think

In the week when Nancy Pelosi tried to pull the rug from under one of the democrats' best new politicians, the UK greens former leader is in the news, "Green party must avoid being taken over by hard left, says former leader"

None of these people get it. Everyone wants change. Not back to the way it was before the rise of fascism. That will just repeat the cycle. Actual change. Not weak ass centrism. A future for people. Positivity, not austerity to prop up a corrupt system

Another record profit for Shell (and other oil companies). This is a slightly adapted version of a cartoon I did in 2022.

The most depressing thing about the current bubble is that so many of the flagship ‘look how amazing AI is!’ things are things where LLMs are a pretty poor fit and other techniques work much better, but the baseline for comparison uses well under 10% of the compute, often under 1%. If you threw 10% of the memory and processor capacity at the non-LLM approach, it would work much better than the LLM approach. Yet it’s easy for OpenAI or Anthropic to burn $10M on a tech demo and incredibly hard to get anyone to spend $1M on a good solution to the same problem.

As long as money is flowing to these companies, they’re starving interesting research of resources because there’s no incentive to build efficient systems when a company is willing to set fire to investors’ money to run the horribly inefficient version for you.

Apparently my health insurance premium is going up 50% this year, so if you’d like to contribute to my employer-sponsored health plan: citationneeded.news/signup

Gonna do a Sunday morning livestream in a moment.

It makes you wonder whether it’s possible to trust *any* software now. If every organisation has decided that speed and convenience trumps everything, and although they still hold their engineers accountable they don’t give them any time to actually review anything, how can you trust anything at all?
