Hey, guess what setting Mozilla reverted in my Firefox?

Yeah, of course it was "Block AI enhancements". I *definitely* had that turned on before the update to Firefox 153.

Fuck you, Mozilla.

ICE agents: search a crowd sourced ICE agent list for their own names from their work computers.

I'm being serious btw when I say everybody should get off ProtonVPN, ProtonMail, ProtonDrive, Proton everything unless they learn and 180.

Aside from the AI brainrot and non-care for basic customer security and privacy practices, their CEO is an abusive dude who does not deserve your money, and he's surrounded himself with senior managers who do not know what they doing.

RE: mastodon.social/@iris_meredith

Quick update on all this: we have made progress and paid some of the more pressing bills, and I have also potentially secured some more substantial work which we'll be finding out about shortly (I hope I do; I'd kill for the peace of mind). That just means I have to survive the next little while.

If you value the writing work I do, supporting it would be much appreciated. There are links to how you can do that both in the article and in my bio. I remain, as always, deeply grateful to all of you

Wow, #Proton is cooked.

Proton AG CEO Andy Yen seems to have fallen into “AI psychosis”, and their CTO Bart Butler has either done the same, or is in full-on “yes, boss” mode with his hardline pro-AI stance.

Proton AG is a for-profit company, but its major shareholder is the Proton Foundation, a non-profit. From the article it seems that the company isn’t able to meet its growth targets, and Andy Yen is convinced that replacing engineers with AI is the answer. He’s flogging his existing employees to use AI, while also saying “This will be the last year that we hire engineers, and starting next year we hire what we used to call product managers, to build things with AI.” This is a clear signal for Proton’s engineer to get the hell out while they can.

Proton sells products predicated on security and privacy, something quite difficult to do well. Unless they do a 180° turn, they’re cooked. They’ll lose every employee who actually knows how to deliver their products.

Where do I look for an AI-free software dev job? Are there boards specifically for these jobs?

I'm required to use AI in my current job. I was trying to wait until some things in my life made a job change less risky, but working against my values is destroying me.

If you're one of the many therapists I'm seeing who was approached by an AI company offering six figures for "de-identified" notes, reports, etc, and you've abandoned your ethics enough to consider the offer, make sure when you negotiate your compensation that you factor in legal fees and the cost of losing your license.

I hate it here.

This Kdenlive cache folder behavior is getting VERY strange. They apparently have some very odd ideas about document identity and data security.

Okay, so here's the thing, as far as I can tell:

When you make a NEW document (File->New) it (randomly?) selects a hash number -- it seems typically to be a 13-digit decimal number (why 12? why not hex? why does it matter? WTH is not just the G-D filename, you duufus?!)

Okay... now let's say you've made a nice video edit, and you want to make a SIMILAR edit of something else, right?

What do you do? You do "SAVE AS" the new filename, and then start making edits. This is an easy way to carry over all your title clips and stuff, so you don't have to keep reinventing the wheel. It's the simplest way to do serial content.

So, naturally, Kdenlive will make a new document id and a new cache folder when you do the SAVE-US, right? Right..? RI-IGHT...? (Annakin / Padme meme goes here).

BECAUSE - NO!!!

It's the same damned ID, used over and over again. I have literally HUNDREDS of Kdenlive edits using the same document ID (and therefore cache storage folder), apparently without issue.
:ani_baka:

(Which makes "documentid" start to seem like a bit of a misnomer).

I should probably mention that searching "documentid" in the Kdenlive documentation portal turns up not a single damned mention. They apparently think this is a hidden implementation detail that users shouldn't have to worry their pretty little heads about.

IF ONLY THAT WERE TRUE! :ani_baka: #Kdenlive #Cachefiles

Horror has always been a political genre. So, for October, we've compiled a list of 13 horror films and some suggested reading to go with them. Here's part 1 of 2. What would you add to the list?

Just overheard a delivery driver telling a grocery store employee that if they let their phone go to sleep while it's on the signature screen (of the supplier's delivery app), it causes their phone to crash. From the exasperation in his voice, I take it that this is a new "feature."

This might be a post about slop code, but who can say for sure?

A database of thousands of US #ICE agents leaked and got posted on @ddosecrets. Bluesky is blocking the link:
wired.com/story/bluesky-blocks

> Bluesky tells WIRED it blocked links to a leaked archive of information on 41,000 ICE, CBP, and other DHS workers because it contains people’s contact information, shared without their authorization.

#Bluesky is VC-funded, biggest investor: Blockchain Capital.

Remember this excuse next time there is a leak affecting people who happen not to be fascists.

Many Colorado courts have stopped livestreaming their proceedings, even though it’s required by state law, in response to abuse by fewer than 1% of users.

Reducing transparency isn’t the answer. Address the misuse, but don’t punish the public.

pagosasun.com/stories/court-li

Politicians demand we trust them with warrantless spying under Section 702 of FISA, yet won’t follow the law on declassifying court opinions that point out abuse.

Congress must demand major reforms and block renewal of 702 until the opinion is public.
