A high performer at Microsoft (200/200 means they got 200% of target bonus and stock compensation) was advised by their manager to take the voluntary retirement program.

Assuming the previous 30% acceptance rate, Microsoft needs 18,000 people to leave the company. There will be layoffs otherwise.

"Why work hard when you're going to be laid off anyway?" is an increasingly popular mantra in big tech.

Hey, I just got an email from Amazon saying they're auto-enrolling anything that does Kindle Unlimited into an AI garbage thing that creates an audiobook read by AI slop machines. I'd already unenrolled, but the auto-renew runs out early next month.

If you see an audiobook of NAMELESS, tell me.

If they try and do that shit to me, I will be immediately delisting the NAMELESS ebook from Amazon. Nothing I see now indicates that there's one that has appeared yet, but if one does I'll act immediately.

Fucking Amazon and their bullshit AI garbage, motherfucker....

GitHub’s former CEO launched a competing platform for AI agents.

Thomas Dohmke has officially launched "Entire"
after teasing the decentralized coding platform in July.

Similar to GitHub, developers can use the platform to host and review code,
but it’s designed specifically to work with AI agents,
replacing pull requests with a “Trails” feature that offers
“customizable evals that are scored by agents on every code push"

"Garrett Langley, the CEO of automatic license plate reader company Flock, told an audience of police chiefs at a private police conference Sunday that anti-Flock protests around the country are not real…and claimed without evidence that the social media opposition to Flock is driven mostly by Russian bots."

Whoa - that's a big call by Microsoft... but despite their 'success', they've never been all that smart. Here's hoping it seal them into the ignominious fate they so richly deserve.

Octavia Butler, mid-1990s:

"Imagine a future where food prices are high because of climate change and war, while grocery store shoppers are subjected to invasive surveillance."

Me, shopping in the mid-2020s and being told I have to wait for someone to unlock the toothpaste:

"Wait a minute."

I didn't expect so many answers to literally sound like people trying to talk away an addiction problem. This is grim.

Often when I am talking with a tech worker, they will say something like, well, look, no one will die from my work. But was that ever true? Is it true now? bloodinthemachine.com/p/we-can (My doctor clients know better.)

“Can the president then offer on eBay to sell them, all of our national security secrets to the highest bidder?”

This question was posed during our Presidential Records Act appeal hearing. DOJ's answer? Yes.

Been prepping for teaching an undergraduate lab on pond water, and so I've been spending lots of time looking through #microscopes.

I see lots of #microorganisms that swim around in tiny circles, like the #Gymnodinium at the start of this video.

#ScienceQuestions :
* Are there other organisms that move in the same way?
* Why do organisms do this?

@patigallardo.bsky.social we are really getting pushed to use it, but the explanations and suggestions are weird. Like we have a set number of times we are supposed to try to use AI in a day in order to save time. There is no indication of a rationale for that number. At this point it feels like desperation for companies that have invested in it.

i'll do another proper announcement post later around primetime but the no AI notice with cute fox is up on itch now: eniko.itch.io/cute-fox-no-ai-n
