Over the past couple of days, the Trump regime has made clear its plans to subvert the current U.S. general election. In an effort to keep control of the House, the Trump regime is threatening California county clerks who do not cooperate with the regime’s effort to sow unwarranted suspicion about noncitizen voting. https://apnews.com/article/california-department-of-justice-noncitizen-voting-election-0a70161dba31a833fa75507a7484853b 1/

more or less confirms that the PHP exploit on Wednesday was overblown, and contrary to claims it would be exploited in 15 mins, we haven’t even seen one confirmed exploit yet. even proof of concept exploits are incredibly hard to write and deploy.
AI companies were lying. again
AI agents are entering banking systems.
Banks now struggle to distinguish between human users and unauthorized AI agents.
I said this because common sense is not so common.
“Multiple Reports Say Nvidia Manufactured the Gaming GPU Crisis by Forcing Big Tech to Stockpile Unused AI Hardware”

Because of course.
Drop-In Time toots were popular this week. A lot of people (relatively speaking) asked about how the setup worked. This blog post which I'd written in 2018 which is actually pretty accurate to what I do today with a few changes:
- I work at the public library now (and once a month at a senior living place)
- I will occasionally do a house call (library will pay for this) or email help
- we no longer have a local adult ed program or a coffee shop where you can run a tab

Talking to some old neighbors who I hadn't seen in years who asked if I was using AI to write code now. When I replied, "No", they asked, "Aren't you forced to?" I found the remark funny coming from tso 60+ years old, non-technical people. I'm now wondering if that came from their adult children, other friends, or the media.

I no longer care to work on any Ruby gems so I've archived all my gems' repositories and added a link to a blog post explaining why: https://po-ru.com/2026/10/18/why-im-no-longer-updating-this-repository
Maintainers of open source projects should be mentoring folks to become their replacements. Not just thinking this is about controlling their project.
I have learned this the hard way for gcc.
You can't just think it is your way or the highway. Also gsoc is NOT a replacement for mentoring inside the project. It should supplement the mentoring that is done, just like an internship.
Also this is not unique to gcc, it is many open source projects.
And then there is the gaming of github stats, the one or two commits in llvm and leave issue. Those are used to gain stats for a job.
Seriously open source is broken because of the gaming of the system.
Even inside companies where you have the person with the most open source commits. Or the person who opened the most issue. Or the person who reviewed the most. (What is funny is that i am that person but I am not trying to play the game of counting, I am just trying to push gcc forward).
At the same time I am mentoring folks both inside and outside of qualcomm on both gcc (and even to a less sense llvm) and performance analysis.
But going back to my original point is mentoring and maintainship overlaps. It is not one or the other but rather both in the same role.
By the time you step down you should have at least mentored a few to be able to take you from you. If you have not you partially failed a as a maintainer as the project will no longer can be maintained in the future.

Man the farts in that room must smell sooooo good.

> What is this? Who are we building for now? Who is that app—generated entirely with AI—actually for? How can someone who “makes” such an app dare to think the value of what a computer merely farted out could possibly be worth a $10/month subscription fee?
