Could abuse discussed, in a political context

Incredible reporting from @kevincollier on how local governments and police departments are able to secure Flock contracts without notifying the public. In several cases, the government bids were *just* under the threshold for public disclosure and council votes, which oftentimes probably would have voted them down.

Drop-In Time is a time where I hang out in a room at the library with a big table and a lot of chairs and help people with their technology problems for two and a half hours. These are their stories. It was cold today so I was warming up some water for tea and by the time I got upstairs at three past the hour there were four people waiting for me. Whoops!

Bob and Kathy had a Medicare prescription drug plan that wasn't going to be around next year so they needed help finding a new one.

Thread on CBS "News" joining forces with gambling companies. Not the first news org to do this, which is even more pathetic.

"Bay Area 'rapid response' hotlines monitoring immigration arrests have seen an uptick in reports since this weekend, said Lisa Knox, co-executive director at California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice. Knox is in contact with eight regional hotlines that field calls of reported arrests."

i have no wish to 'convert' or 'convince' AI-art-creators to stop doing/creating AI art. instead i wish for them to go away and leave me+us alone. i see it the same as bigoted people! i'm not here to educate u, please leave

seeing some art communities try to make room / welcome / fix ai-art-creators. to me it says "goodbye Lu". goodbye

luckily this seems to be a pretty rare view but its more common in laptop/computer-based communities (surprise surprise)

yes we are all trying to figure out what AI taking over the world and our jobs means. that doesnt mean we let it into our art spaces

if u turn up to one of our events in london doing something AI, no one is gonna stop u, but i think you'll be swept away by all the human-as-possible collaboration going on instead and no one will be interested in your AI art project

(yes yes yes i'm using the term "AI" to mean "big bad AI" dont shoot the messenger and dont be that reply guy)

Apparently, my daughter was given an assignment to use generative #AI to create a poster / cover for A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court in her English class. She took offense to this and asked if she could just do the assignment by hand or digitally using one of her #art apps. She was told no. So, my daughter decided to take a stand and not do the assignment. We support her decision completely. Asking someone who lives for creating her own art to use AI and refusing to accept anything else is inexcusable.

So, my criteria are:

* Desktop, graphical calendar.
* Multiple calendars.
* Subscribe to remote ICS files, or at least be able to import them.
* The usual repeating-event features.
* Persistent *graphical* alerts (that nag me, but can be snoozed) with customizable time horizons. Not just a little background bloop or whatever.
* Not fucking losing my data.

That's not much to ask for.

Hey, this eMudhra cert issue might mean I can MITM this Blink home camera system and get it to work without phoning home or requiring a smartphone!

I wrote on Boing Boing about The Underwater Cabaret, a satirical magazine incredibly made by a poet hiding from the Nazis in a Netherlands attic.

Framing the php2shell story as "AI uncovered php2shell" is like hearing an awesome song and crediting the guitar instead of the player. It's just incorrect and steals credit from a good researcher.

The underlying bug was discovered in 2020, a related one in 2024, and they were both rediscovered again through exploitation in 2026 by a human researcher. The researcher used LLM tech to help with parts of the process, not all of it, and says so in the writeup.

The right-wing owners of Scientific American, once the pillar of science writing, have ruined the publication's content and reputation. An incredibly sad situation: thenation.com/article/society/

#FOSDEM will not have a DEIB room 😔 True to #DIY #OpenSource spirit we will fix this ourselves.

Support @Gina @elena @RosannaSibora initial proposal for a DEIB room with the #FOSDEMPledge @janl proposes:

Take a min or 2 to discuss the need for diversity, equity, inclusivism & belonging (DEIB) in your talk or have a talk on this topic in the room you organise.

For me #FLOSS is about people. Let's make sure everyone feels welcome & enable their participation in the FLOSS ecosystem. ✊

I bought something from Best Buy online for store pickup, and they put me on a mail list that has no unsubscribe link. They want me to create an account to unsubscribe. I tried the chatbot with ridiculous results: It only wants to talk about products.
