"I keep coming back to this graph because it’s so eye-popping, almost impossible to believe. As you see in the legend, the blue line is data centers. The grey line is everything else. Everything else. Commercial properties. Rental properties. Single family homes. Multiple family homes. Pick your preferred flavor of development, NIMBY, YIMBY, urban, rural, it’s in there. You basically have rapid data center growth and everything else contracting."

If Elon has used his companies to put his thumb on the scales of war, does that mean his companies are now legitimate military targets?

When a platform offers who privacy, always ask "Privacy from whom?"

"Of course, while locking a chat can limit access, it doesn’t address concerns about how sensitive information is stored or handled...locking a chat doesn’t create end-to-end encryption or a separate encrypted vault, change how long it retains the chat, remove information that ChatGPT remembered before a chat was locked, or change the 'Improve the model for everyone' setting."

For the coordinated installation of a scheduled security release, some of the Codeberg member services (forum, membership form and voting system) will be turned off at 21.10. 14:00 UTC. Once the updates are finished they will be available again.

Claroc’s discovery of easily-searchable #Meta Muse #AI conversations is clarifying to me for several reasons:

1. This case illustrates the difference between *access* and *searchability*. While these shared conversations were open to the public, I doubt their sharers understood that they were easily *searchable* through 3rd party passive DNS query logs. While some privacy advocates may claim that anything public is PUBLIC for all purposes, I think privacy through obscurity is still something worth designing into social systems, because it meaningfully lowers the risk of abuse, even with public data.
2. But the corollary remains valid: you shouldn’t publicly share anything you don’t want to be easily available to adversaries.
3. People use Meta Muse, of all things, to conduct business-critical tasks, even confidential ones. This is inconceivable to me, but apparently this is something people do.

Accident Or Not, The No Kings Takedown Is Why You Shouldn’t Rent Your Megaphone From Zuck - techdirt.com/2026/10/20/accide " Even if you believe that Zuckerberg and Trump were laughing their heads off and jointly pressing the button to silence the No Kings account, the real problem was that this was possible in the first place."

AI and moral de-skilling

Over and over again the research on cooperation says: human beings are highly cooperative.

But we don't believe it. WHY?

This massive global study (over 100k participants from 125 countries!) finds we are highly cooperative *and* that we underestimate others' cooperation. The likely reason is because as a species we survive with cooperation but the costs of potentially being betrayed are so high that we are over-vigilant about the possibility. This can be MOVED

This is an excellent addition to the whether-to-use-Twitter-or-not conversation. (I'm in the LOUD NO camp and will remain there.)

Just realized Google was recording my phone calls on my older Pixel phone. I'm 99% certain that I didn't set it to record calls, so this likely happened during an update of the calling app. Even if the recordings were local only (which I can't determine so far), I'm not happy about this.

We are open source, cooperatively-run, community-led and in the process of joining the social web. We're also working collaboratively with others in the space towards different modes of decentralisation, going against enshittification and one-size-fits-all approaches.

If you'd like to support our work and help allocate more resources towards these things, there are several ways to do so at the link below. Thank you! 💪🐦‍⬛

In an interesting moment to watch, legally: 404media.co/reverse-engineer-a

I'm not a fan of / don't respect vibecoding, but I *am* a fan of jailbreaking devices and *legalizing* decompiling (notably, the decompiling work that's interesting is not happening by vibecoders though).

It's an interesting moment because previously corporations have been in the "we can do whatever we want because we're exploiting the commons" perspective, and now things are starting to hit against their own stuff. What will happen? I don't know.

I'm not sure what is going to happen from a legal perspective, but I think we are looking at one of three outcomes:

- This all gets declared legal, which would be a huge win against the ways corporations hold copyright over people
- This all gets declared *illegal*, which could be a win against a bunch of the business cases genAI hinges upon
- But unfortunately, there is also the likely third option: big corporations become allowed to do these things, individuals are not

honestly, I’d take a swing at enacting an anti-LLM policy at absolutely any small business at this stage.

“no LLMs were used in the making of our bagels. 100% human-made baked goods here.”

“our steam extraction carpet cleaning uses sulfide-free detergents and absolutely no use of AI, it’s operated by Kenny the new guy, but he’s been well trained by Steve, the guy who drives the truck and runs the pump now.”
