Ancient Peoples remains, artifacts, sites and sacred ground all to be destroyed as mountains are blown up to reach the deep copper veins. Also noted, millions of gallons of water will be needed by the mining. Coming from a desert where water resources are limited and declining. Also noted, the corporate ownership is foreign. this is why -- though i appreciate the rhetorical function of the article -- that hamilton nolan piece about how "if anthropic employees really do have concerns about AI safety they should unionize" was so out of its depth. i posted about it already but at the end of the day i really do think that the only reason AI industry has received more money than basically anything ever because the central pitch was "replace all your needy wokie coders/writers/etc. with the magic robot." that's kind of it

Honestly everything happening right now makes so much more sense when you consider how influential LessWrong and Slate Star Codex were amongst the Silicon Valley elite and techbros in general. They all think it’s part of an insane prophecy.

If you don’t know: basically they think that if they make AGI they’ll live forever because mind upload. Or even be resurrected. And yeah this is all bizarrely tied to New Atheist movements. You wouldn’t even believe me if I explained it further.

I am simplifying it. But the actual philosophy sounds MORE insane trust me.

The best single book about all of this remains “Computer power and human reason: From judgment to calculation.” by Joseph Weizenbaum.

It’s 50 years old this year, and obviously doesn’t cover LLMs specifically, but the concepts apply.
