Honestly everything happening right now makes so much more sense when you consider how influential LessWrong and Slate Star Codex were amongst the Silicon Valley elite and techbros in general. They all think it’s part of an insane prophecy.

If you don’t know: basically they think that if they make AGI they’ll live forever because mind upload. Or even be resurrected. And yeah this is all bizarrely tied to New Atheist movements. You wouldn’t even believe me if I explained it further.

I am simplifying it. But the actual philosophy sounds MORE insane trust me.

If you/your project is affected by DigitalOcean stopping their OSS credits program, please shoot me a PM immediately. Might be able to help.

Boosts for visibility would be appreciated.

Currently, we have two accounts on our Fedi.Punk.Guide list that are actually Bluesky accounts but are mirrored to Mastodon via “Bridgy Fed.”

I'm currently considering removing these accounts from the list and not adding any bridged Bluesky accounts in the future.

Here are the three reasons. What are your thoughts on this?

The best single book about all of this remains “Computer power and human reason: From judgment to calculation.” by Joseph Weizenbaum.

It’s 50 years old this year, and obviously doesn’t cover LLMs specifically, but the concepts apply.

(You can easily find a PDF of it online.)

For the uninitiated, Bernie Sanders' AI bills are being written by a eugenicist cult full of predators organizing "rape orgies."

Michael Vassar in that list is also the former president of MIRI, the organization closely advising Sanders.

Guys, we can't except our "leftist" politicians preoccupied with the 1% and all that to care about eugenics or sexual assault or cults or anything like that right?

I've written a new article: this one started off when I read @pluralistic's excellent book Enshittification, and it's my attempt at an analysis of what enshittification looks like from the inside out. Why do people enshittify? What set of beliefs and mentalities make people able and willing to enshittify? And why has the outcry over it been comparatively muted?

Europeans/EU Citizens!

Update on the EU Kids Act:

The EU Commission has opened up the submission form for feedback on the bill. Let them know how much you don't want this! Let them know how much harm this bill will do to civil rights and economic stability! It's better to try and fail then to roll over and take it!

P.S. And as always, mail/call your MEPs and other relevant government officials!

If you’re still wearing a mask, thank you.

Please know you’re not alone.

Many of us still mask, test and isolate when sick.

Being the lone masker can be difficult, but your long term health is worth it.

As a high risk, immunocompromised person… I see and appreciate you!

Anybody got suggestions of a good libre/FOSS website scraper that generates a static site, with all relevant asset download and URL substitution?

Cami Clark, who famously asked Jeffrey Epstein to finance her porn business after Epstein had been sentenced for trafficking a minor, has reportedly stepped down as key advisor to the Anthropic's CEO and her own husband, the doomsday cultist Dario Amodei, in preparation for the IPO.

"I am aware, that if you are not lurking on the internet as much as I do, of how utterly insane that paragraph sounds. However, every bit of it is heavily documented by numerous sources. The people in this story are not a secret society coordinating over dinner. They are a social scene: overlapping friendship groups, funding relationships, and sexual and romantic relationships, all of it threaded through the institutions asking you to trust them about AI regulation."

There are eerie parallels between what’s happening in Irkutsk and what happened in Wuhan in early 2020.

Doctors claiming the government was hiding the extent of the spread.

Masks being mandated.

Schools being closed.

Information being shared by independent journalists and locals via social media.

We know one person has died of pneumonic plague and hundreds are in quarantine.

Let’s hope they get it contained.

One thing is certain, there’s no harm in wearing a mask!

A well fitted respirator like an N95 will help keep you and your community safe.

This week's video:

Here in NC, we have a state senator with a 21,000+ acre farm. Where workers just kinda.... keep dying.

RE: ec.social-network.europa.eu/@E

"AI" companies are companies such as OpenAI or Anthropic. These are billion dollar companies. Training LLMs requires *massive* amounts of resources that regular people or small companies who aren't already funded with billions of dollars, simply don't have.

It's not that Mom and Pop can start a company, make a business out of training "AI", and make a living being their own bosses.

Allowing anyone to train "AI" on copyright-protected content benefits *only* the billion-dollar companies and cements the stranglehold on power they already have. It benefits nobody else.

If I purchase a paperback book, I may post a photograph of one page or so for a book review. That is considered fair use. If I upload photographs of all pages and thus reproduce the book in its entirety, I'll quickly hear from lawyers. What is different when "AI" companies integrate the copyrighted book in its entirety into its corpus and the reproduce it?

Today's "AI" companies should be abolished. Certainly not allowed to train on copyrighted material, which benefits only them. And they'll pull up the ladder behind them. I distinguish between "AI" companies and AI companies. Anyone can train a Convolutional Neural Network and then run it on $100 hardware for object detection to activate the cat food dispenser when the camera sees the cat enters the room, or detect when the delivery guy delivered a package at the front door and send a notification to Home Assistant if you're not at home. Nobody except Big Tech can train a LLM.

The @EUCommission asks for our opinion. Be sure to use the URL they provided, don't just comment in a Mastodon reply.

It turns out #NOAI is a winning promise for indie developers and artists looking to offer counterprogramming to big tech and Hollywood crap on a sandwich.
