Multiple GNOME contributors have told me that they feel it is pointless to vocally oppose the use of generative tooling and that they feel it is just a matter of time before a pro-slop policy is officially adopted by GNOME.

I want you all to know that the relentlessly anti-AI stance is the popular opinion. If you state your opposition as well, you'll be in good and plentiful company.

I don't hold grudges but one time we had a new CTO who got the whole team upset, bullied the team lead and decided that everyone is suddenly full stack.

Fast forward four months later and everyone on the team had left besides that one guy who depended on the position to keep his visa. (I still applaud the front-end dev who simply didn't show up one day — good for her.)

That sounds ridiculous until you realize voice-cloning scams are already here.
Have a code word. Call the person back directly. Verify before sending money, giving card information, or doing anything else.
We used to tell people not to trust random emails.
Now apparently we have to tell them not to automatically trust familiar voices either.

the people that are enthusiastically for generative AI often turn out to be nazis, homophobes, misogynist, anti-muslim and anti-semitic...
the people that are categorically against AI, are often women and/or queer, POC, jewish and so on...

regardless of your politics, if you are enthusiastically for generative AI, you need to understand this fact. because even if you know you're not a nazi, when you come into our communities and start negging us about AI and not taking 'no' for an answer, you sound just like one.

ask yourself: why do your priorities align more with the nazis, then the people they are trying to exterminate?
then ask yourself: who is in control of AI? who benefits of you renting it?

as an anarchist we don't really see institution-building as a particularly great theory of change

it might have something to do with having wound up at odds with organizations we created, you know? that bit of personal history might make the seemingly abstract concern feel a lot more concrete to us. just speculation

but to whatever extent you do end up building institutions anyway (and there are reasons to, even so), remember that preventing Nazi takeover is mandatory. you must have a strategy for that.
