“What kind of Software should we fund?”

Separately from what I’m responding to, Tante, though, does a good job of gleaning useful observations from the original post. Read this; don't read the original it's responding to
Giving the vibe-written ideas of an npm founder whose track record is such that, if they found the philosopher’s stone they’d use it to turn gold into lead, any airtime is probably not the most constructive use of anybody’s time
Esp. since said idea is basically “Spotify for OSS libraries”
Spotify being a model FAMOUS for paying artists a liveable wage…
Wait, no. It’s famous for the other thing. The opposite.
opened the iOS 27 mail app yesterday and discovered it had enabled intelligence priority inbox or whatever. Setting aside the fact that I don't get enough email to need it and whatever your feelings are about whether LLMs help with email. The fact that I now don't know for sure whether my phone sent my emails to some server somewhere without me enabling it is a very terrible experience for a "we're all about your personal privacy" company.
This is the first iOS I seriously consider rolling back

time to move UN from #murica if it can't do its job there...

this is also the kind of thing that a "malevolent" AI would do, which is the real future threat, not some abstract annihilation...

#DOGE spent $6.7 billion paying federal workers not to work - https://boingboing.net/2026/09/16/doge-paid-leave-6-7-billion.html efficiency, huh...
Dear Fedi friends,
I want to share a discovery that made my MONTH.
10 days ago, while I was putting together the slides for my presentation at Berlin #FediDay, I noticed a new entry in the @cercle directory (the Mastodon instance set up by the Service Numérique of the French Ministry of Culture):
✨ @MuseeOrsay ✨
Ouiiiiii!
Paris' super prestigious museum - that welcomed 7.3 million visitors last year - is now on the #Fediverse !!!🥳
Let's give Musée d'Orsay a warm welcome ❤️
business school isn't actually teaching you a science. It's teaching you an ideology.
It exists to produce the managerial class - enforcers of capital who normalize the idea that "profit" is the natural goal of human existence, rather than a parasitic extraction.
Good news or bad news depending on your POV: Usenet archives are suddenly easy to dig through, thanks to a new service. It’s built by a big data guy, and it’s packed with every awkward thing you ever wrote in a newsgroup in 1997.

Reminder: eIDAS, which the EU recommends as the "privacy-preserving solution" to this, is not sovereign, it has a hard (and intentional!) dependency on remote attestation powered by Google and Apple. Users of Linux or anyone not using a phone will not be able to read anything with user-generated content as a result.
Let's meet in person to support each other getting free of big tech 💚

It must be frustrating to work your way up to the federal bench only to spend your days answering grade-school-level questions like: Can feds show up at someone’s home and hotel room to threaten them with prosecution for criticizing the government via email?

I have spent some time today pondering about genAI policies and Free software projects.
My position is "no genAI, thanks". I have examined my own thinking, and my conclusion remains the same.
I like @IzzyOnDroid's policy:
https://izzyondroid.org/docs/general/AppInclusionPolicy/#ai-policy
If I am wrong, and in the future, all the ethical and other issues are resolved, thenhere *at that point* one can always change one's mind.
But if one hold one's nose out of some belief that AI is inevitable, or that the outputs justify the harms, and says "yes" now, it is much harder to change the position later.
Palestinian rights were pushed to the political fringe for decades. In 2024, Sandra Tamari and Saqib Bhatti wrote: No more.
Now Macklemore has been dropped from Ed Sheeran’s tour—and every other opener and Sheeran’s backing band have followed him out, in solidarity.

The East Palestine derailment began long before a burning axle sent a train off the tracks. Jami Wallace traces the disaster back to Norfolk Southern’s safety culture—and to warnings from rail workers that went unheard.
