Isn't it odd how no AI CEOs called for pacing the frontier when the internet flooded with deep fakes and revenge porn? Nor did they call for it when people got hurt or killed because an AI chatbot gave them misinformation, encouraged selfharm, or induced delusional behavior — isn't that odd?? I can't help it if so many of the awesome accounts I follow are in German. And I want to be able to understand their messages without clicking on 'Translate' 50+ times a day. Plus this way I would understand / could attend ALL the talks at Berlin #FediDay.

I’ve been thinking along the same lines, with a few additional notes:

- Outsourcing was never rolled back. Industry went abroad and never returned
- Companies overall adjusted and now, more or less, benefit from it
- Much if that is because many companies also outsourced design and engineering, so lower coordination costs
- Most products are still worse than pre-outsourcing
- Domestic labour was pretty close to destroyed.
- Countries that went all-in on outsourcing effectively deindustrialised

I've thought often the last couple of years about how the “Fire your developers! Use AI!!” craze feels really similar to the outsourcing / offshoring mania of a few decades ago — and how many of the same problems it shares:

- Cost-cutting shiny things
- but turns out generating code was the easy part
- and building cumulative shared understanding is everything
- and shortcuts around that dig you in a hole really fast
- and that hole is full of code that nobody can maintain.

Something in the water, I guess. Something always in the water that once in a while explodes when conditions are right, like algae blooms.
