In Tom Tomorrow's latest, voters of a "parallel earth" elect a poop-flinging baboon—and party leaders and loyal supporters keep defending him, even when the mess lands on them.

I put the Stop Gen AI website into maintenance mode, to stop the spread of ClickFix malware.
I bought WordPress malware scan/removal software a few days ago with "updated definitions" and scanned several parts of the site and backed thoroughly and quarantined lots of malware.
Apparently QuickFix is still there. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I am a cybersecurity person, but I am so extremely lacking spoons at the moment. I have spoons for automated removal, but not manual.
Stop Gen AI's other cybersecurity people are busy, in crisis, etc.
Please, please, please. Someone please manually remove it. I will muster up a small PayPal payment for your labour.
I can give you web server and WP creds via Signal message.
Plesse share! #infosec
anyway if your software development tool will notably increase cancer rates and air pollution I think you should stop using it.
"One guy in #Sweden built a #searchengine to fight Google, and it works.
It's called #MarginaliaSearch.
It runs its own #crawler and builds its own #index instead of borrowing Bing's. It has no ads, no investors, and no loans.
What it does differently: it ranks for text-heavy, non-commercial pages. Personal blogs. Old university pages.
The weird corners SEO strangled. Every result tells you whether the page uses affiliate links and JavaScript, and you can filter them out.
There's an "explore" mode that just shows you random sites from the index. It's open source under AGPL, so you can host your own copy.
It's keyword-based, so don't type a full question at it. Type two nouns and see where you land. Every #searchengine now shows you the same twelve #monetizedpages."

The most surprising realization I had in the last years was how important it is to be public about your refusal to participate in harmful acts therefore giving others "permission" to do so as well. It really matters.
between DHH, brodie, that fucking ex-googler Linux is Best guy doing an anti-Palestine disinformation campaign on fedi, lunduke, liam of gamingonlinux, linus torvalds himself… it really feels like a lot of the loudest influencers and personalities in this space are mask-off assholes up to no good, doesn’t it? it really feels like they’re doing that thing fascists do where they normalize casually doing horrid shit in a space.
There's a concept called active ignorance where you choose to not accept or read evidence of a problematic person or community norm as you don't want to have to think about the harms and perhaps have to give it up.
It's why I'm irritated by the folks who are all no politics please, just the tech. Or that "Bob and Van" piece.
Who you accept in your community, who you choose to work with, especially if you excuse abusive behaviour damages a community more. We see you.

Big Tech does everything it can to hide its true water impact
Because of Big Tech super-secrecy, "the most honest answer to how much water AI consumes will remain a range of source-specific figures. Their differences are useful evidence. They show that the environmental risk is real where infrastructure places new demand on a constrained water system, while a universal bottle-per-prompt statistic cannot identify where that pressure occurs."

"Oh my god, my AI agents are talking to one another!"
This seems incredibly impressive to anyone who hasn't, at any point in their lifetime, been in an IRC channel that had two misconfigured bots that started talking to each other until someone kickbanned one or both of them and then told the operators of said bots to sort their shit out before letting them back in the channel.
The deaths of 25,000 asylum seekers and the abuse of 150,000 survivors in Libyan detention are now at the center of a push for the ICC to investigate European leaders and Libyan suspects, Cathy Otten reports, for crimes against humanity.
