This moron is going to start filing bills terminating funding for transportation, movies about Transylvanian vampires and trans-Atlantic relations long before she ever bothers to learn what a transgenic mouse is.

AP's piece on Reflecting Pool algae is a perfect of example of how Big Journalism allows itself to be a conduit for Trump world's lies. The phrase "without offering substantiation" -- better than nothing -- doesn't make up for being a stenographer for deceit.

After months of "not making videos due to being excessively On The Farm," I'm rolling one out tomorrow!

About how Jane Austen explains a lot about "industrial" agriculture! (Bc she wrote about rural life & how economics/politics out there actually work)

Organizing a new union of 2500+ workers is an incredible achievement. Congratulations USC United Facultry! I encourage USC to respect faculty’s resounding vote and begin bargaining toward a fair contract.

Anybody know a good phone option with these requirements:
1. I can buy it right now
2. It only does calling and texting, maybe calendar and maps
3. _NO_ web browser or app store
4. Works on T-Mobile (VoLTE)

I've been looking and I can't find a fuckin' thing.

Reminder: You're being surveilled when you use corpo tech.

A better world is possible.

The one bright spot of LLMs is that we've learned exactly how morally and creatively bankrupt this industry is, and how fast people are willing to throw away everything they said they cared about for decades - craft, understanding, efficiency, detail, all of it - just to cosplay competence and bandwagon their way to groupthink targets they don't even realize were made up to manipulate them.

Christ it's embarassing.

The fact that we're willing to rely on LLMs to generate code knowing that it only mostly works because that code has been generated before thousands of times is not an indication that stochastic models are good, it's a massive, punishing indictment of computing as a field.

Using an insanely huge expensive model to quasi-reproduce work that's been created thousands of times already isn't productive or efficient. It's a symptom of profound failures of language, practice, process and imagination.

RE: infosec.exchange/@darkuncle/11

“When writing is hard, it’s often not just because we are tired, underfed, or inefficient but because our mind is trying to tell us crucial things. How many draft texts to colleagues or family members have we all stared at in frustration, wondering why they don’t feel quite right—until we finally realize that they need to be rethought completely, or not sent at all? When a book I was writing became an almost hopeless grind, I tore up 90 percent of the manuscript; it became a far more honest work for having been halted at a conceptual dead end, forcing me to turn back.

AI can’t make that kind of judgment.”

Holds equally for code.

“The Psychology of Software Teams by Cat Hicks is a vital companion for any leader building a humane, high-performing organization. She skillfully dismantles the ‘Brains-in-Jars’ myth, proving that innovation is not a solitary act but the result of social learning. By introducing cognitive scaffolding and fostering thriving ecosystems, Hicks provides the missing link between organizational design and the individual human experience."

Big Design Up Front vs Rapid Prototyping ... two wrongs that'll never get it right even with LLMs.

Software needs more analysis, valid metrics, and infinite freedom.

Any Madison, Wisconsin peeps?

I'll be speaking tomorrow at two public libraries, the Verona Library at 10:00 am and the Meadowridge Library at 2:00.

I've never been here before. What a lovely place. And the people are definitely nice.

Hey, who remembers that time that the South lost the Civil War, so slavery was abolished? But racist Texans didn't want the slavery party to stop, so they kept slavery going for another 2 years after abolition? But then a bunch of Black Union soldiers from the United States Colored Troop under General Gordon Granger marched into South Texas with guns, and threatened to shoot anyone that wouldn't release their slaves? So then those Black soldiers finally forced those racist Texans to release their slaves? But then American people pretended that Juneteenth celebrates the news of slavery reaching the far reaches of Texas, when "the news" was really Black Union soldiers with guns? Because we lie to ourselves and talk about Texas like a distant space colony that was out of contact with the rest of humanity, but in reality people traveled to Texas every single day during that two years, and everyone knew what was going on? And no white people went to jail for keeping slaves for 2 years after abolition, because Lincoln was a self-admitted white supremacist and slavery sympathizer?

Happy Juneteenth!
