She's been complaining about the drastically reduced usability of the voice assistants on both of her screenless devices (that she relies heavily upon to maintain her independence) for the last couple of months. The things were always kind of stupid, but at some point they got real bad real fast.

It seems the bot responds to most of her commands now by doing a web search and reporting the results...that is, when it doesn't just do something totally random like call a Walmart in a different state...

I never had any use for voice assistants on smartphones until I started hanging out with a blind woman a year ago or so, who makes extensive use of them. "Ok," I thought, "an actual non-creepy use case, maybe there is some point to these things after all."

Fast forward to today, we're in my car on our way to the grocery store. She wants to call ahead to let them know I'm coming so she pulls out her phone, turns on the voice control and says, "Call Buck's." Normally, the phone would respond "Calling Buck's Grocery Store", and then it would dial. Easy peasy. This time it didn't work like that.

It took three "Call Buck's" before the voice assistant did anything at all, and then it responded by calling the Walmart Pharmacy in Tempe, AZ. We live in Montana.

Next she tried "call 555-123-4567," to which the voice assistant replied "555 minus 123 minus 4567 equals..."

At which point she screamed and turned the phone off.

Good work with the AI, everyone 😒

The developer @laffer1@bsd.network didn't just add download restrictions (which would have been ok in my book), but they actually added this restriction to the copyright license of MidnightBSD as well, making the entire project nonfree software.

A lot of people talking about dumping Proton right now are misunderstanding what actually happened.

Feds were able to coerce the Swiss government to coerce Proton to hand over whatever data they had on an anonymous Stop Cop City email address, that was being investigated for terrorism.

That metadata included credit card details information for the account, which is very difficult to anonymize.

Proton offers cash payments to work around this obvious security flaw.

If you must pay for a Proton account for a radical project, pay with cash (you can mail it) or washed crypto (Monero -> Bitcoin).

All credit card payments are traceable, even to a privacy-focused company.

Your security model should not rely on a business to fight the state on your behalf.

Your email or VPN provider is not going to risk prison time for your $5/mo. It's just not going to happen, at least for anything commercial. Tuta and every other email privacy-focused email company will comply with court orders.

Trying to find the perfect email provider is a fool's errand. It doesn't exist.

You can however anonymize your useage of privacy friendly services like Proton, Tuta, or Mailbox by not entering your credit card number, phone number, name, personal email, or IP to that account.
