First up, another excellent summary from @amras of the kite-flying they facilitated last week: (1/3)

### Roles
We chatted about our gap wrt admin, management, and finance roles. We have high hopes for our new finance applicants! And we absolutely want to see more people involved who don't call themselves "technical".

### Support for Maintainers
We discussed how signing up to be a maintainer currently feels like also needing to define the process of maintenance (e.g. release strategies, stability concerns). The maintenance work itself is relatively easy, but the process could be better documented.

### Democratic Tech Fund
With the DemocraticTech.Fund spinning up, we chatted about its goals. The priority is to increase the social capacity of tech, not create new technologies. The fund hopes to do this through setting up and supporting collectives to use services, raise awareness, and campaign for democratic tech.

To make it concrete: to move away from Microsoft (teams, sharepoint) and Google (drive), Nextcloud is a decent option, but you may also want decentralised group chat like matrix, maybe a better collaborative document server, à La Suite Docs, video conferencing like BBB or La Suite Visio. And of course a Single Sign On - one account to log on.

Altogether this is not something every individual person or collective may want to run for themselves, so you need a service provider, ideally a cooperative one, where you can be a member of and collectively maintain a production team and a process to evolve together - as technologies (and social needs) evolve.
In this sense the @coopcloud federation provides a backbone to work together on the development and maintenance of the tech stack as a "configuration commons". With the #dtf we became members, and it is exciting to see what is cooking there and how people/cooperatives collaborate along shared goals.

Slightly more information about this #citizenInitiative here for a #European #SocialMedia here: citizens-initiative.europa.eu/

IF This reaches the required amount of signatures it will have to be examined by the European Commission. What conclusion the commission will come to I cannot predict, but it may consider the option of building on existing infrastructure *cough* #mastodon *cough* …
These processes take quite a long time, but I’ll keep updating here ;)

@lwriemen I just don't understand how they don't understand.

Operating systems age attestation bills are going to be the big joke of the future. Old OSes, old versions of OSes, self-builds of free software, etc. Are unenforcable laws legal?

@lwriemen Republicans shouldn't be able to manipulate elections by suppressing turnout, not even to hurt themselves.

The right to vote belongs to the people, not to the powerful. When they harm the right to vote, regardless of the impact, they have harmed the rights of the people including you and me.

RE: mastodon.energy/@catalystcoop/

It was really nice to look back over the year and see everything we managed to accomplish despite the chaos. Especially the way that client work, grant funding, and volunteer contributions all help improve and expand PUDL over time. But without sustained maintenance funding that value will get lost.

“It is absolutely unacceptable that those leaders who are incapable of fulfilling [their responsibility to protect and improve the lives of their citizens] use the smokescreen of war to hide their failure and, in the process, line the pockets of a select few – the same ones as always; the only ones who profit when the world stops building hospitals and starts building missiles.” .. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is heading for a loss of 14 billion dollars this year. Its market share is plummeting, and CEO Sam Altman recently admitted that they have “screwed up” their product. All it takes now to accelerate that decline is ten seconds of your time:

Cancel your ChatGPT subscription.

I get asked to show up to book clubs, online and offline. Here is why from now on the answer is always "no." If you think this might have something to do with "AI" ruining yet another thing for everyone, you're absolutely 100% correct.

Call to action to cis people: be assholes anytime you get asked for your sex assigned at birth. Write letters, complain to staff, refuse to answer. Make it impossible to collect sex assigned at birth. Be really offended that anyone would ask you. Make enough noise that if trans people want to quietly not answer or give whatever answer feels correct to them, no one will notice.

"On average, developers anyway create mediocre code" is not an argument justifying generating more of it at, at least, a magnitude higher rate.

"Async PR reviews often end up with just LGTM-stamping anyway" is not an argument justifying doing even less of code reviews by going from at least one person per PR understanding the implementation to zero.

Writing HTML and CSS is not so complicated. What *is* complicated is everything that tries to do it for you.

I can't totally fault some pop punk bands, when the big bands in punk, that still aren't on the radio, are getting higher ticket prices, raised stages, and security. Yes, Circle Jerks and NOFX, I'm looking at you.
but still rock for pun shows.
