New Jersey and Virginia both elected Democrat Governors.

Every Virginia county flipped blue.

Zohran Mamdani won New York City despite the elite spending millions of dollars to defeat him.

This is a night for the history books.

The people are sending a clear message that they’re done with fascism.

They’re done with Trump.

They’re ready for change.

Tonight showed that playing to the middle isn’t the way to win

Voters want progressives who will push for change

Mamdani stood with immigrants. He stood with trans people. He stood with the homeless and the marginalized. He stood with people of colour.

He stood with everyone society has left behind.

He won.

Abigail Spanberger made it clear throughout her entire campaign that she would protect access to abortion.

The Democrat will be the next Governor of Virginia, protect that state’s status as the only safe haven for abortion care in the south.

Way to go Virginia!

“In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light.

Here we believe in standing up for those we love.

Whether you are an immigrant, a member of the trans community, one of the many black women that Donald Trump has fired from a federal job, a single mom still waiting for the cost of groceries to go down, or anyone else with their back against the wall.

Your struggle is ours too.”

Zohran Mamdani in his NYC Mayor victory speech

Things I learned from State Farm today:

- My 50 lb ebike can no longer be insured by a personal articles policy. It is now understood to be an automobile.

- Specifically, it's a *motorcycle* auto policy, because like bicycles are only ridden in summer (!?)

- If someone gets an ebike and replaces ~90% of their car trips, that clearly lowers their risk of making a car claim. So does the "auto" policy for the e-bike allow you to get a multi-auto discount on the auto policies? lol no gfy

So, apparently, Mamdani is the new mayor of NYC. This could be a huge deal for modern democracy.

Suburban Chicago mayor calls Trump's violent thugs “a bunch of liars" after they "forced this car accident, and then they started literally beating up innocent bystanders.”

PSA from 404 Media: you can opt-out of a data broker selling your flight travel data to the government to be searched without a warrant. Here's how I did it. This is ARC, the data broker owned by major U.S. airlines like United, Delta, American, etc

Dear Bill Gates,
If Trump loves your climate statement and you say he misunderstood it, and if climate scientists don't like your climate statement and you say they also misunderstood it, maybe the problem is your #climate statement.

Every citizen should be made aware that Trump's masked thugs are violently kidnapping other citizens and then brazenly lying about what prompted the abductions.

Every potential juror should understand this, too.

Holy shit Philly! There will be a screening of our 3 part series It's Revolution or Death in collaboration with anarchist author Peter Gelderloos in it's entirety on Friday at ORCA.

Why aren't more folks screening this? It comes with a cute little zine with discussion questions and everything!

75 years ago today, European nations signed this Convention, so the Holocaust could not be repeated. Beware those who want this to end.

I think we could all benefit from understanding the difference between an argument - which can & should be initiated on a basis of good-faith - and a fight/row... The former has the purpose of achieving mutual understanding. The latter has the purpose of making someone feel bad. I think we all (myself included) need to practice the former and recognise and defuse the latter.

The 'college' I attended in the US (undergraduate university) has an 'honour code' which obliges all students to *confront* behaviour they see among their peers which they believe is non-compliant with the honour code. Some of my peers offered 'confrontation training'. It led to lots of discussion & introspection in our student community. I think it was one of the most powerful forces for conscious social improvement I've ever experienced. I'd love to see it implemented at a community level.

As always, this week's comic is free on Patreon. Paid members get to see it as soon as I finish, which is helpful when every passing day features a decade's worth of news. patreon.com/posts/mike-johnson

This is NOT a difficult situation to solve.

There is a really easy solution: keep recommending one server for people who don't like choice, but regularly rotate it so growth is spread out. The app could have a button saying "Join mas.to" instead of "Join mastodon.social", for example.

The app makers could choose a pool of reliable general servers with track records going back many years (some are listed here: fedi.garden/servers-sorted-by-) and recommend one of these on the front page of the app. They could then regularly change which one is recommended, so that each one in the reliable pool gradually gets a share of new signups.
