There's an alarming new article in the science magazine article #Quanta titled "How Soon Will the Seas Rise?"

"The uniquely vulnerable West Antarctic Ice Sheet holds enough water to raise global sea levels by 5 meters. But when that will happen — and how fast — is anything but settled. "

Note it's now "when", not "if".

I've now lived through the optimistic age of science articles all focused on telling us how very bad things are going to be if we don't do something.

We're now shifting into the age of science articles telling us that some of those very bad things we were warned about are now unavoidable but we don't know how soon they'll happen.

The 5 m rise is just from the West Antarctic ice sheet. Add in Greenland and the expansion of the warming ocean waters and other glaciers we could get 15 m rise.

Still, please do something. We'll now lose our coastal cities in a few generations, including my home of Christchurch, NZ, but there's still so much bad we can avoid if we act now.

Just over a year ago we announced our new series, InterRebellium. We had envisioned a series of documentaries covering a global uprisings around the world, examining their roots, analyzing their tactics and speculating how future militants could take things one step further.

InterRebellium was originally going to be a series of 30 minute mini-documentaries. We began working with an anarchist videographer in Chile, making connections, finding participants who we could interview. As we began watching the interviews we were beyond amazed by depth of the answers, the quality of the footage and the sheer amount of topics we would need to cover to do the film justice.

After 8 months in the editing room, we released InterRebellium 01. The Estallido Social in its final form, a 90 minute full length documentary. We hope this will be the first of many such documentaries. We eventually hope to cover the uprisings from 2018-2020 in Ecuador, Haiti, France, Hong Kong, Lebanon, Iraq, Sudan, Colombia, and The United States but we only have capacity to work on one film at a time and for now, we have set our sights on Canada.

I was fascinated by the combination of simplicity and complexity involved in starting this vintage ship engine, even as I shook my head at the user experience. Everything is visible and exposed, and you have full control over the process, yet you must have deeper knowledge of how the engine works just to start it.

As someone who studied Mass Communication in college, I am absolutely shocked by the little media coverage of the AI slop video published on social media by the U.S. president... where he puts on a crown, gets on a jet & proceeds to drop massive quantities of fecal matter on protestors of the No Kings day.

Had this happened 10 years ago it would have been front page news everywhere.

Are we so desensitized by his undignified behavior + AI slop that nothing shocks people anymore?
