It hasn't been many years since racists felt mostly obliged to keep their ugly views quiet.
The Trump era has completely reversed that. Now -- with Dear Leader in the front of the parade -- they flaunt their racism, and threaten people who refuse to be bigots.
Is anyone here on #fiber #internet ?
Did you get a device from your #ISP ?
...is it running #Linux ?
I just realized I can't fnd any sources to the #Telekom Glasfaser Modem on the internet. Did no one ever request the #code under the GPL?
The device is powerful enough to use as a VPN endpoint. #openWRT deserves it!
An 82 year old with a valid green card has been disappeared to Guatamala.
Luis Leon came to the US in 1987.
He sought asylum from political persecution in Chile.
He’s been in the US almost 40 years.
He lost his wallet (and green card) in June & when he went to replace it he was disappeared by ICE
What followed for his family is the stuff of nightmares.
They couldn’t find him. Couldn’t talk to him. Couldn’t get him a lawyer.
This was a senior citizen who did absolutely nothing wrong.
Who hasn’t lost their wallet at some point?
On July 9th the family were informed he had died.
They were consumed with grief and still had no information about what happened to him.
Mercifully it turns out that information was a mistake, and Leon was instead being held in Guatemala.
Why Guatemala? No one knows.
Was it a mistake? Was it punishment?
This is what happens when you move fast and break things.
Someone who was granted political asylum should never have to fear being deported to a foreign country. This shouldn’t even need to be said.
He has multiple health issues and his current condition is unknown.
Family is flying to Guatemala to see him
This should never happen. People need to keep speaking out.
Leon did everything the “right” way and still got disappeared.
The cruelty seems to be the point
Many years ago I needed an emergency hysterectomy due to extreme and uncontrollable blood loss.
I spent five days in the hospital and was discharged despite obvious complications.
My surgeon had a vacation planned and wanted me gone.
I had to go to the ER four separate times to be taken seriously, and the fourth trip required a man to advocate on my behalf.
The result? A huge internal bleed and infected abscess that required a second surgery and a month long hospital stay.
The bill? $0.
Because it was in Canada.
This is why I say healthcare is a basic human right.
The way I was treated was appalling, but let’s not pretend that patients don’t face similar barriers and misdiagnoses every day all around the world.
We should not have to suffer financial ruin because we got sick.
We shouldn’t fear bankruptcy because a doctor or hospital delayed our care.
Healthcare is a basic human right.

The free press is a threat to fascism. They will attempt to silence dissidents at all costs.
Some are silenced by their organizations like CBS and Colbert.
Some are silenced by being arrested like the two journalists in Cincinnati.
Some are shot with “less lethal ammunition” like the British and Australian journalists who covered the LA protests.
Some are thrown in ICE detention despite having a work visa and a valid path to citizenship.
Mario Guevara was arrested June 14th and is being held at the Folkston ICE detention centre.
He faces deportation to El Salvador.
He’s committed no crimes and spent his days covering ICE raids and deportations.
This is clearly retaliation for speaking out.
Once they attack the press, things fall apart quickly.
Speak up for Mario Guevara. Speak up for all the journalists trying to do the right thing.

Hmm - as a frequent advocate for #Matrix and #Element, this is food for thought: https://マリウス.com/giving-up-on-element-and-matrixorg/ Sigh. Seems that very few things in the world are as good as they seem, and many things are far less good (especially things built & run by corporations).
Nice interview about Tournesol collective farm, near Montreal. https://geo.coop/articles/what-its-farm-co-op
It pairs well with this longer, but excellent, conversation about cooperative farming with Chris Bodnar: https://collaborativefarming.libsyn.com/website/a-simple-cooperative-farm-model-a-short-history-of-modern-co-ops-w-chris-bodnar-of-close-to-home-organics

I love Jason Fenske’s videos, and I respect him as an engineer and reviewer. But his turning against #Elon and selling his #Tesla Model 3 only after DOGE fired his wife smacks of “it’s not a bad thing until it’s a bad thing that happens to ME.” Elon has been doing really awful things for a long time, just not to the people he cared about.
Having said that, better late than never! Welcome to the resistance, Jason. It’s nice here. We have cookies.
One of my oldest friends ghosted me when I went public with my chronic illness.
They wanted the “old me”.
They wanted me to hide it better.
Two days ago they reached out to say they’re now disabled & worried they won’t be able to keep their job.
They asked for my help
They said they didn’t realize how bad it was.
They lamented the lack of support.
Said they’re hiding it as best as they can but it’s exhausting and wearing them down.
You know what they didn’t say? Sorry.
This is the case all too often for those of us who advocate for disability awareness and chronic illness.
We’re shunned. Ignored. Abandoned.
Treated as a nuisance and told to “try harder”
Our pleas for solidarity go unheard.
The only time people pay attention is when it happens to them, and by that point it’s too late.
We can’t give you your health back. We can’t transport you back in time to take the advice we gave you to maintain your health. We can’t make it so you won’t deal with discrimination
All we can do now is help you reach a point of acceptance.
Help you dismantle your own internalized ableism and build a new existence in a world that will now turn its back on you just as you turned your back on us.
And we do this with compassion and kindness despite the way we’ve been treated.
We show up for you even when you wouldn’t show up for us.
Please, consider saying sorry.
Consider acknowledging the way you treated us. It would mean a lot.
Andre Hernandez-Romero is the gay make up artist who was kidnapped and disappeared into the supermax El Salvador prison CECOT.
Why was he sent there? Because of his tattoos.
He came to the US legally in 2024. He sought and was granted asylum because he was trying to escape anti-LGBTQ+ violence and political persecution in Venezuela
He should have been starting a new life in the US. Enjoying the “freedom” to be who he is and love who he wants.
Instead he’s been locked in a prison in a foreign country because of an ICE mistake.
It’s the definition of cruel and unusual punishment
Today The Hill announced a prisoner exchange. The US has secured the release of 10 US citizens held in Venezuela in exchange for returning more than 250 Venezuelan men being held in the El Salvador prison
Hernandez Romero is one of them.
This young man who fled Venezuela because it wasn’t safe for him, has now spent months trying to survive a foreign supermax prison only to be swapped like a chess piece and sent back to the country he fled in the first place.
Keep saying his name. Speak out. He needs and deserves protection.
Abolish ICE.

Covid has caused an increase in patients with Dysautonomia, a condition which destroyed my quality of life
Yet at Dysautonomia International’s big fundraiser, there was no mask requirement
Worse, they’re publicly stating masks don’t work & quoting the debunked Cochrane study
I’m generally not one to punch down on advocacy organizations because I think we need to fight like heck to lift one another up.
I appreciate that they had HEPA filters, corsi rosenthal boxes and were apparently providing free masks.
But I can’t sit silently when an organization that should be protecting people starts spouting far right rhetoric
What difference does it make if you put masks at the door when you’re telling people they don’t work?
If you’re not leading by example & wearing them yourself?
People look to these organizations to set the tone.
They assume they have our best interests at heart.
Dissuading people from masking during a pandemic is not advocacy. It’s not patient centred. It’s not leadership.
We’ve known for years that Long Covid often causes Dysautonomia/POTS.
There’s been such a significant increase in patients that there aren’t enough doctors to treat them.
Many have lost everything to the condition and are now fully disabled.
Yet this conference will end up causing more disability.
It will end up creating more patients when what we desperately need to do is stop the spread of Covid and start helping those who’ve been disabled already.
The best way to do that is to wear a mask.
Their post says: “there is insufficient evidence to show that mandatory masking in a public setting does anything to reduce COVID risk
Please read this Cochrane review, considered to be the definitive unbiased analysis of this important public health question”
That’s a lie.
They say that people feel “passionately” about the subject but then absolve themselves of any responsibility to actually protect the attendees.
They claim that doctors and Long Covid researchers agreed there was no need to mandate masks at the event.
I will be honest, I wish every indoor event and conference had mandatory masking.
I’m sick of people dying and becoming disabled from a disease we know how to prevent.
But I also recognize that almost no one is willing to require masks because we’re cosplaying 2019 “normal”
Hospitals, medical conferences and events for disabled people need to be the exception.
They need to do better.
They need to realize that they have a duty to do no harm.
They have a responsibility not to make sick people even sicker.
If they’re not willing to do that, the bare minimum they can do is not deride those who do take precautions.
They could encourage masking rather than spread lies that they don’t work.
They could refrain from sharing junk science that’s been largely debunked & discredited
We know masks work.
We know respirators work even better.
We know two way masking is better than one.
We know asymptomatic transmission is a very real threat.
We know all of this, and yet “advocacy” organizations are choosing to ignore it.
We have to push back on this. Over 400 million people have Long Covid. Many of them also have Dysautonomia.
Another Covid infection could wipe out whatever baseline they have left.
We need leaders and advocates to set the tone.
We need them to be honest about transmission
Above all else, we need them to stop the spread of Covid.
We need them to say “enough” to preventable death and disability.
We need them to wear masks and encourage others do the same.
When you know better, you do better
