Somewhere Barbara Streisand can heave a huge sigh of relief. It will henceforth be known as "the Vance effect."

Amazon bought Goodreads and turned it into a dumpster fire where "reviewers" trash books even before galleys and review copies are sent out. thebookseller.com/news/authors

It's a shame, because Goodreads was a valuable service for authors and readers back when...

From the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker:

Town councilmembers from Fountain Hills, AZ, removed the press table from its council chambers in April, citing “partisan” reporting by the local newspaper that primarily used it:

Identifying federal government employees is not doxxing. It was bad enough when Elon Musk suggested otherwise on X about DOGE employees.

It's even worse when a U.S. senator suggests it in legislation about ICE agents.

Just saw this scrolling through Facebook. I don't know anything about the matter, but my point remains valid: using other people's platforms does not and never will guarantee the safety of your data.

In a future of friendly and #sustainable digitization, we don't only need free/libre software, but also fairly produced and open hardware to operate the systems.

The German non-profit computer mouse manufacturer "Nager IT" needs human resources for a new future. If you can and want to support them, check out nager-it.de/maus/uebergabe#:~: (German only). There is a meeting in a few hours.

It would be great to keep the project alive and have more of the resources available under open licenses.

Has anyone ever encountered this before? Attached is a mock-up of a problem I've been having over the last few weeks in Windows 11 (only Windows, never any of my Linuxes). I can't screencap the problem: a lot of the time generating the weird blue rectangle locks up my system, and even when it doesn't a screencap won't capture the weird blue rectangle.

Supreme Court's right-wing super majority is totally corrupt and in the bag for the Trump dictatorship. Doesn't get much worse for democracy than that. archive.ph/xjyiq

I just finished getting a one hour demo of the current meta in agentic programming from an actually-technical CTO.

100% stand by my statements in the latest blog post. It was very slightly better than I expected, but the CTO said many times "I would never trust this in production", and their main use was knocking out POCs that were being handled by an offshore (read: cheap and not very good) dev team.

Anyone laying off their Real Software Engineers on the grounds of AI productivity are nuts.

A Florida judge seeking a nomination to the federal judiciary turned a procedural ruling on one of Trump’s nonsense SLAPPs into a MAGA diatribe. Then he got his nomination.

The Florida Bar needs to investigate.

I shaved my head during the covid lockdown, and I wound up liking it so much I've been doing it ever since. I'm turning 54 in a week, so I've decided to grow my hair out for a while just to see what color it is. Well, also to see how aggressive my widow's peak has become, and to see what bald spots I've developed over time.

I expect mostly what this will do is re-enforce my perception of hair being unnecessarily itchy.

I made a very silly video about (hypothetical) logistics of farming dodos

Trump has no effing idea how oil markets work. No amount of domestic production will change global prices when the market is reacting to Iran’s threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, which is a choke point in the shipment of 20% of the world’s daily oil supply.

It was bound to happen some day--I'm starting my dive into Home Assistant.

My wife wanted a doorbell for our house, I wanted to protect our privacy, so it was the gateway project to set things up. Now my wish list is full of various home automation widgets, and I'm trying to decide how far I want to go with home automation.

What are your favorite Home Assistant devices?
