Elon #Musk’s #xAI Is Exploring a Way to Make AI More Like Donald #Trump - wired.com/story/xai-make-ai-mo "A researcher affiliated with Elon Musk’s xAI startup is researching a method to alter the politics of Grok and better align the chatbot with conservatives." another good reason never to use it

I love this live interpretation audio feature that @mayfirst is using in their membership meeting. They have English and Spanish speakers on the virtual panel as well as live translators. This slider lets you change who you hear, depending on what language you understand. It works really well!

The Coventry experiment: why were Indian women in Britain given radioactive food without their consent? - theguardian.com/news/2025/feb/ "When details about a scientific study in the 1960s became public, there was shock, outrage and anxiety. But exactly what happened?"

Making residents of subsidized housing “subject to increased levels of surveillance simply because that is where they live really highlights how inequitable and unjust these applications of surveillance can be,” EFF’s Beryl Lipton told @Gizmodo. gizmodo.com/clearly-discrimina

Part of reply from punk label to my query about getting off the big tech sites: "We acknowledge this, and we are also frustrated by this, however the reality is we post on these sites because that's where the people are. People who need to hear from us the most. People who we need to reach because we are first a record label who very much needs people to learn about our artists, and seek out their records. That's how we are able to continue to exist."

Any commentary on this?

us pol / where's the strategy?

From "Hacking Exposed," 2012, but still relevant:

Mergers, acquisitions, scandals, layoffs, rapid hiring, reorganizations, outsourcing, extensive use of temporary contractors, and other events may provide clues, opportunities, and situations that didn’t exist before. For instance, one of the first things to happen after a merger or acquisition is a blending of the organizations’ networks. Security is often placed on the back burner in order to expedite the exchange of data.

A reminder that "executive orders" are exactly that - orders from the president for the executive branch. They are not laws, and they do not directly bind anyone not in the executive branch of the US government. They might affect how laws are enforced and other things the executive branch does that affect private individuals, but they are not "orders" that private individuals (or organizations) are required to obey.

I have decided that a server with training wheels is preferable to me constantly beating my head against a LAMP stack. Migrating now.

I typed Gulf of Mexico into Google Maps, It edited my query without permission and showed me the Trump cult invention that isn't and never will be the real thing.

The sole honest element is the oil-drilling rig as the illustration for what "Gulf of America" signifies.

Fuck you, Google, forever.

I remember when people would tell me, you have to buy software from the large software companies or it will probably break and be terrible.

Today, it’s like, Google property? Microsoft invested? V.v.sus. The software lives in a self-hosted machine named for a pun on some obscure kink, the developer is a furry, the logo is two furries, it’s gpl’ed and if you do five minutes of due diligence you’re going to see all of their politics and most of their butt? I will trust this software with my life.

i kind of hate when people talk about "tech" because if you asked people who they think the worst people in the world are, people like Musk and Andreeson would be dramatically disproportionate on lists named by programmers.

the NRx and TESCREAL bullshit subsists within a rich, powerful sliver of the tech community. there is a reason why those motherfuckers hate their workforces so much. most workers welcome their hatred, but fear losing their jobs.
