Residents across the United States are being inundated with text messages purporting to come from toll road operators like E-ZPass, warning that recipients face fines if a delinquent toll fee remains unpaid. Researchers say the surge in SMS spam coincides with new features added to a popular commercial phishing kit sold in China that makes it simple to set up convincing lures spoofing toll road operators in multiple U.S. states.

"The ultimate goal of these kits, he said, is to phish enough information from victims that their payment cards can be added to mobile wallets and used to buy goods at physical stores, online, or to launder money through shell companies."

Can we just take a moment to appreciate that Mark Zuckerberg has managed to shit in his own bed so badly in the past few weeks that fediverse image app Pixelfed, made by one person in their spare time, has managed to rise far above Instagram on the App Store?

Lastly, it can be easy to assume that there is no way to protect privacy, and that surveillance gets worse every year. Don’t give up hope — there are many reasons to be optimistic. Here are just a few: eff.org/deeplinks/2024/02/priv

President Biden claims to support press freedom but by extracting a guilty plea from Julian Assange, his administration handed Trump powerful weapons to attack the press. He should pardon Assange to reduce the harm.

A friend just sent me this. Hard to know whether to laugh or cry.

If you ask me, we've been moving backwards with increasing speed since the start of Reagan's first term. Now, Trump, Musk and the tech CEO bros are turbocharging that reverse move: The death of DEI in tech computerworld.com/article/3803

Fully appreciating that the people who see this are unlikely to be representative of the general population, I ask this nevertheless:

Do you, currently, run your own email server, without significant problems with email deliverability?

(I am asking because, so often, one hears that it is not possible, so I wonder how many other people here are successfully doing the impossible :))

@ayoub unwaivering and uncritical support of Israel is one of the few things that enjoys bipartisan support in US politics.

Surveillance is the other.

I'd be happy to share my notes - I'm no hosting genius, but I've been running email services that are great to use, full-featured, and provide user-friendly delegation to others wanting to manage their own domains &/or mailboxen. Happy to share my notes.

I wish more people capable & confident to do so would run their own email services, and provide access to them for their friends (who would, one hopes, realise the great benefit of having a family domain). That'd help to undermine the current cabal of mostly ill-intentioned email providers out there. Email's too important to trust to a colossal corporation that sees you (and your correspondents!) as a resource to be data-mined. Plus, it really isn't nearly as hard as people make it out to be.

FOR JOURNALISTS: SecureDrop provides strong security through its use of offline encryption and the Tor network, but sources still need your help to protect themselves, especially in monitored environments.
