The European Federation of Journalists, #EFJ, says starting January 20, it will discontinue posting content on the #ElonMusk-owned #SocialMedia platform #X.

In a statement on its website, EFJ says it can no longer ethically participate in a social network whose owner peddles #disinformation and #propaganda.

Did you know we are building a wiki of tutorials and resources inspired by our sessions?

Our goal is to create hands-on modules on topics like game development, cybersecurity, web development, and more — anything our rangatahi are interested in. While it’s still in its infancy, we’re excited to grow it over the next few years.

Everything is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 or AGPLv3+, with contributions from rangatahi, kaiako and industry.

After some time of trying mastodon, I quite like it here and will probably stay so it's maybe time for an introduction:
I'm a student in physical #oceanography in northern germany and mainly here for finding interesting research related content. Second interest is just general #opensource stuff & programming and third is politics.
For the research part I'm mostly a fan of #hydrothermalvents , #oceans , #climate , the #arctic , #antarctic , #glaciers , #seaice but also #ships and more.

@iris_meredith I love how obnoxious people are on LinkedIn, holy moly. It's incredible that these people like, manage to navigate society

Here's my @readeck (alternative to Pocket for bookmarking/deferred reading) reverse proxy in Python, in case anybody is interested. It works, but the code needs a bit more polishing up. So far it's been a few trips' worth of coding/experimenting on the bus to make this work.

Coining a new term (maybe?) for software development tools that make it so easy to accidentally shoot yourself in the foot that you have to consciously put in effort to avoid doing so:

"feet-seeking missile"

you're welcome

Me: #coding .
Gets distracted.
Back to code: BLANK STARE.

Me: "Dear compiler, what was I doing?"

Compiler: You were creating errors right here!

Anti-fluoride mayor of Northland talking on RNZ about all his mercury fillings and how he was poisoned by them as an argument against fluoride in the water, as if he might not have a mouth of rotting teeth if he listened to the overwhelming scientific evidence that fluoride in the water is a good thing for public health.

Starmer continues his Harris/Walz 'pivot to the right' and losing votes because of it, like the Dems did.

Starmer doing everything to ensure the Tories and or Reform get in as he abandons the core Labour vote to chase bigoty

And none of us can stop him, none of us will persuade the greater public that attacking the Other is wrong, because Bigots would DIE for their Bigotry and they hate us for being better people.

We are thankful to have reached a labor contract that makes certain our team will receive the wages, benefits, and protections they deserve as they advance EFF's mission of ensuring that technology supports a more just, more free, more thriving world.

@dcz I gave a talk on this "semi-firm firmware" subject and the challenges of free software approaches to it a couple years back at SCALE: youtube.com/watch?v=9xbvMtFLOm

An irregular reminder: #firmware is a category of #software .

If you advocate for #FreeSoftware but don't talk about #libre firmware, I'm interested I'm learning why you're making the exception.

To conclude, for me sustainability is first and foremost a cultural problem, and we can solve it only through a profound cultural change. Now this is the core of my PhD so, for the sake of everyone here, I will not dig into that, it would be long and tedious and not without major debates.

My dissertation doesn't write itself and my clients' graphics don't design themselves (AI crowd don't dare answer this) so I'll end it here.

Be nice to each other, we need to come together for this fight.

The biggest problem with 'sustainable design' is that the mainstream approach consists in 'how can we both keep the cake and eat it', so we have design magazines like Dezeen praising stuff like 'design student makes a sustainable avocado out of beans', so that millennials like me can keep having avocados all year round without feeling guilty about the exploitative economy of all-year-round available food.

Subjecting myself to the NBC parade as some sort of Puritan penitence ritual.

Here's a "typical Western attitude" that most of us are utterly unaware of: social systems are either hierarchical or horizontal; they either have strong states and laws or they don't.

Actual people, however, living their actual lives in the actual world do not seem to agree with this sentiment, and have never had any problem adapting different ways of interacting at different times of year or different places in the landscape. Political theorists should probably be taking this into account.
