Veblen called these “industry” and “business.” Industry’s goal is efficiently meeting the material needs of the public; business’ goal is efficiently extracting profits. Business can only do this by sabotaging industry, but it has to be careful not to sabotage so much that you end up with situations like the one Boeing is in.
Censorship in the name of national security, if it’s ever permitted at all, requires a concrete, imminent and severe threat — not the mere prospect of one.

Now, Israel has escalated its efforts to silence Al Jazeera, raiding its West Bank newsroom and ordering it closed for 45 days.
At the same time, the U.S. expanded its targeting of foreign-owned platforms by taking aim at Russian media outlet RT.
@lwriemen @piwakawaka For sure, but the point I was making wasn't that the US is unique, rather that Trump is a uniquely US version. It's the same way that Boris Johnson's upper-class coded dufferishness was the key to the English psyche, but wouldn't have worked elsewhere.
To outsiders it looks weird, "How could they fall for that?"
Pro-tip: Write code for the reviewers. Helping them helps you.
A very specific case: Separate code movement from other changes to independent commits.
As a reviewer, checking code movement with 'git show --color-moved' takes mere seconds rather than minutes. Checking subsequent changes on top is easy as well. Combined, it's much, much harder.
And remember, it might be you looking at the same commits years down the line.
Join the team of chefs and developers of #HurryCurry tonight at 20.00 CEST to play a few rounds of the game and provide valuable feedback to them.

“‘He lost everything, but he’s giving anything he’s got,’ she said. ‘That is the beauty of the people in the mountains.’”
It’s a problem that so many people think it’s only their community that normalizes the collective good after a disaster. It’s not just “people in the mountains” or whatever—this is just how people be! We all share these values! https://wapo.st/3XOffyS
Today's Help Desk is a shameless delaying tactic.
You can tell this is an American cartoon. Where else would you find a calculation done solely in SI units and then the final answer is given in imperial units?

@lightweight For those interested, at @oeglobal we are running a live demo of Big Blue Button + H5P on Oct 9 https://www.oeglobal.org/event/wednesday-demos-live-h5p-in-big-blue-button/
Ooo - thanks to @cogdog for the pointer to this! https://yewtu.be/watch?v=byn3cYsmoSk or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byn3cYsmoSk - #BigBlueButton 3 brings the ability to embed #H5P learning objects into video conference content which is very cool for instructional use cases! I honestly can't believe that *any* education provider still uses Zoom or (**shudders) MS Teams/Google Meet for this stuff.
Kudos to Pro Publica who exposed the nonsense of this Potemkin plastic recycling process back in June. It’s green-washing by ExxonMobil, which says they turn plastic back into oil, which can be used to make plastic again. But the process actually works terribly, with a 2–5% yield. Worse, the industry uses mathematical tricky known as “lying” to label that e.g. 30% recycled, or even 100%.
Plastic recycling: it’s as good as clean coal! https://www.propublica.org/article/delusion-advanced-chemical-plastic-recycling-pyrolysis
There is no vile promise Trump can make that will cause Big Journalism to take seriously the dire threat he poses to democracy and fundamental liberties.
Take his weekend Purge talk. He can't wait to unleash the worst police -- the racists and bullies who otherwise decent cops and public officials allow to operate with impunity. And standing beside those rogue cops will be his brownshirt brigades who can't wait to kill some of their neighbors.
This is real. But journalism just shrugs.
From the Dept of How-the-Sausage-is-Made : Today's comic is 450x7661 pixels. 450 is the width I decided on when I was playing around with making a webcomic that was compatible with smartphones. I never really had many readers who used smartphones to visit my site, but I don't have many vision impaired readers either and I still do a transcript, so... 1/?
