I just had to email my 16-year-old's teacher to explain that he did not use AI for an assignment. (I watched him complete it!)

I also included multiple references for why no one should be using AI detectors in education.

TurnItIn is making $$$$ by lying to schools.

Today, we have a veneer of female advancement, full civil liberties and empowerment narratives. But most gender historians argue patriarchal oppressions have simply shape-shifted into more pernicious and invisible forms. Liberal laws guaranteeing equality, pay equity, and safety conceals the fact that female economic, social and sexual dependence on men remains firmly entrenched.

If San Francisco’s Proposition E passes, we can expect the police to use untested and potentially dangerous surveillance technology on the public for a full year without oversight. We believe police should know how surveillance tech works before unleashing it. eff.org/deeplinks/2024/01/san-

One mistake the GOP made is to cater to a small, vocal part of the base.

The two mindblowing books I read in the past few weeks (attached) opened my eyes to how small these partisan ecosystems are.

Some of the people insisting that Biden should do X or Y do not realize that they, too, are speaking for a very small subset of the voting population.

I have a #chip which doesn't exist on the internet.

Can the Fediverse help me find a #datasheet ?

It's marked as AM330, from the Chinese company Amicro Semiconductor. The website has no info, but it seems to be a #microcontroller for navigation.

Makes sense, I found it inside a #robot #vacuum, OEM model KK320.

I'd like to reprogram the robot, but I need to know at least the pinout. Help, Fedi!

If we really wanted to change the world, we'd make politicians' internet search histories public record

Seeing multiple articles about Amazon/Ring having decided, all on their own, out of the goodness of their corporate hearts, to stop handing video footage over to cops without a warrant, and zero of these articles have reported on what impending legal, PR or regulatory shitshow is barreling toward them to inspire this sudden change of heart.

Poll reveals 90% of citizens would vote for their pet over current political candidates. The remaining 10% don't have pets.

Texas Governor Abbott signals that he may (will?) defy the Supreme Court order regarding the border.

In 1830, Andrew Jackson, as president, refused to heed a Supreme Court order regarding the removal of Native Americans from Georgia.

Jackson's refusal gave us the Trail of Tears.

Jackson remained popular.

The similarity: Both defiances are deeply racist.

The difference: In 1830 only white men could vote.

Pay attention to what's happening in this case: the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals just essentially ruled that it's fully legal to jail journalists for reporting leaked information, or any information they obtain from government officials without going through "proper channels."

This is a serious issue for #journalism in #Texas, #Louisiana and #Mississppi and we should hope the Supreme Court sets things right quickly. texasobserver.org/priscilla-vi via @TexasObserver
