A similar thing happened with the invention of the printing press. Suddenly people were bombarded with an enormous amount of material and they had no way of evaluating the reliability.

The printing press launched religious wars. That's when blood libel took off.

The Internet and the rise of cable news has done the same.

The most vocal voices from social media, who are amplified by the mainstream media, come from a relatively small group.

The turkeys to be sold with the skin on are shunted down a different processing line. Separately, offcuts are ground into a slurry. They are sprayed onto the skinless turkey. Then a skin is extracted from the skin-pile, where it is fit over the turkey, affixed with the slurry. Within the processing plant, this is known as a "turkey toupee.” It's sold to the customer, none the wiser that it's not even the turkey's original skin.

This news is also one more alarm re. the current AI paradigm, its reliance on concentrated corp power, & the undemocratic decision making power this gives these (primarily) US-based corps.

It is depressing how often Bender & Koller 2020 is cited incorrectly. My best guess as to why this is is that people writing about whether or not LLMs 'understand' or 'are agents' have such strongly held beliefs about what they want to be true that this impedes their ability to understand what we wrote.

Or maybe they aren't actually reading the paper --- just summarizing based on what other people (with similar beliefs) have mistakenly said about the paper.
