Breaking news: Brazil makes homophobia punishable by prison 🗞️

In an almost unanimous vote, the Brazilian High Court has ruled today that homophobia can now be punishable with a prison sentence

This is a huge win for the LGBTQ+ community in Brazil that needs to be celebrated 🇧🇷

The 9-1 vote ruled that homophobic slurs and hate speech are a crime, similar to other forms of hate speech, such as racism.

I missed this last month: France has launched an initiative to reduce textile waste by paying people to repair their clothes instead of throwing them out.

Starting October, people will be able to claim between €6 and €25 of the cost of mending clothes and shoes. The money will come from a €154 million fund and is meant to support businesses in offering more apparel repair services.

Cool stuff! 🧵🪡

It is not like a calculator. While many use that metaphor I think it is misleading, for many reasons: scholar.social/@Iris/109695439 (scroll up for context).

W.r.t. plagiarism: if one uses ChatGPT for text generation during idea generation, drafting, writing, one is automatically at risk of plagiarizing since the system uses existing texts without you knowing. As author it is ones responsibility to read, know and cite ones sources.

Okay, this is ridiculous. The NYT is recommending Cascade somehow as the best dishwasher detergent. The last two people who serviced our (now 15-year-old) beloved and very quiet Miele dishwasher said don't ever put that crap in your machine.

We used the exact same pods recommended by NYT and it made our dishwasher stink and it didn't get things clean.

My wife ended up making a homemade version that uses mostly natural stuff plus a pinch of something like Oxyclean. Best detergent ever used, and that's all we use now.

In case anyone is interested, here's the recipe:

DIY Dishwasher Detergent
YIELD: 4 1/2 CUPS / 2.2 LB (ENOUGH FOR 36 LOADS OF DISHES)

1 cup / 225 g super washing soda (sodium carbonate)
1 cup / 225 g powdered oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate)
1/4 cup / 62 g table salt (sodium chloride)
50 drops lemon essential oil
12 drops peppermint essential oil
10 drops lavender essential oil

Washing soda and oxygen bleach are skin sensitizing. I recommend
wearing nitrile gloves while you prepare this DIY and washing your
hands afterward.

Mix dry ingredients. Add washing soda, powdered oxygen bleach, table salt, and enzymes into a large, non-metallic mixing bowl. Whisk to combine.

Add essential oils and stir until everything is thoroughly combined.

The essential oils will accumulate in small clusters at first. Keep
stirring to break them apart.
Transfer the detergent powder into an airtight glass jar or storing
container. Store sealed in a dry place, protected from moisture.
Use about 2 tablespoons per load.

I believe in trying to detect "AI"-generated content.

I vehemently do NOT believe in using the products people are peddling to universities to purportedly do this for professors in grading students.

Even if these things worked at a 99% correct-detection rate -- and they aren't even close -- that would mean potentially ruining the life of an innocent student based on a black-box algorithm.

I won't do that. Period.

And studio-grade at that as well :)

You can buy them fully assembled or build from a kit, or make everything yourself. From reviews they seem to be relatively very cheap compared to how good they sound.
They run off of a USB connection.
These are open-back over-ear. I wonder if there's designs for a closed-back version...

so I'm looking for some assistance setting up a plex media server on my main networked computer for use with other devices in my home that have the plex app on them. My issue is that most of my movies and/or tv shows are audio only, so they are mp3 and/or ogg formats. Adding the folder that contains my media to libraries yields no content within those libraries. If anyone who is blind has successfully set up plex with audio only movie/tv show content, I'd like to pick your brain. 🤯🙃😕

In the United States, when you buy a house or a car, you become a target of scammers. They will send mail to your house, pretending to be your mortgage company or your auto maker or your auto lender, insisting that you must give more money for some other thing. I received these three—two postcards, one "URGENT" letter—just today.

The U.S. is a scam culture. We are beset at all times by people trying to trick us out of our money, and it’s all functionally legal.

Fellow educators:

1) Don't do cop shit.
2) Don't pay for a service that does cop shit.
3) Don't trust claims of system performance without documentation.
4) DO educate your students about what ChatGPT is and why they wouldn't want to use it.

Screen caps from some spam I received just now:

'We examine temporal trends in code sharing in ecology and evolution publications since 2010.

We find that scientists are overwhelmingly (95%) failing to publish their code.

We also find code sharing can considerably improve citations.'
