For no reason whatsoever, I’m just gonna drop this piece here where I argue that it’s pointless to do CO₂ removal (CDR) before we decarbonize significantly.

Extremists looking for books to ban can't be bothered to, you know, read books. So they go to a "source" that's notorious for spouting bullshit -- you guessed it, ChatGPT -- for advice on what books to ban.

Up until two months ago the CLA Page on the Hashicorp site explicitly stated that the goal was to dual license and that they were committed to having a FOSS license on their projects. People signed these legal agreements with this commitment in mind.
I think this is important to note for two reasons:
1. The leadership at #Hashicorp can not be trusted. They've proven that any commitment or statement they make is conditional.
2. This seems like a huge legal liability for Hashicorp.
In favor of bad takes:
"A community devoted to playing with new ideas will generate many bad takes. And that is ok—if everyone understands that we are all thinking through problems out loud together, that bad takes are stepping stones on the road to surer conclusions. "
I'm in the camp that leans toward thinking things would be better if free email services went back to very limited volume.
I think the main outcomes would be that people do some combination of going back to storing their email locally and/or opting for paid email services, both of which I see as primarily good things.
“In the first ruling of its kind [in the US], a Montana state court decided Monday in favor of young people who alleged the state violated their right to a “clean and healthful environment” by promoting the use of fossil fuels.”
This is the hope I needed to feel today. The kids are alright 🙏

Daily reminder that Discord is not a wiki, guide site, or a forum. "Did you ask on the Discord?" is not a valid answer because someone will be looking for that info in a few years and either find invalid invites, or a dead Discord that they have to try to unearth their answer in previous discussion like they're trying to find obsidian arrowheads in Egypt. Assuming that Discord server even still exists at that point. And unlike when a site vanishes, there is no wayback machine for Discord servers

Subsidies aside, I wonder if anyone has tried to analyze how much gasoline would cost if the U.S. and others were not willing to take human lives in order to keep the price of oil down.

A big part of the reason that embodied energy is less important for major appliances than for electronics is that their useful life is much longer. The 2012 paper that I link to upthread assumes 14 years of useful life for appliances, compared with 1-5 years of usesful life for electronics.
Apparently that Kansas newspaper raided by police had been investigating the police chief for sexual misconduct at his previous job, according to an interview with the publisher https://thehandbasket.substack.com/p/a-conversation-with-the-newspaper
Hey anyone who uses #etsy, they are changing their terms and conditions so you cannot participate in class action lawsuits against them. You can opt out using these steps, but you have to do it before 23rd August 2023.
It applies if you have a profile there, whether you sell or not!
