Earlier this year a former inmate came to me w/a USB drive of surveillance videos another inmate had picked out of the trash at Men's Central Jail & sold to him for $50 of dope
He hid it INSIDE himself for mths then smuggled it out
Here's what was on it: https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-06-24/fights-beatings-and-a-birth-videos-smuggled-out-of-la-jails-reveal-violence-neglect

I’ve been shouting with my whole chest about the danger of large instances for as long as I can remember.
Even if this rumour is not true today or even if the large instance admins decide to act intelligently and with backbone and refuse such an offer if it is true, the danger remains.
You don’t have to wait for the ship to sink before taking action. If you’re on a huge instance, move to a smaller one. Spread yourselves thin. Make each instance a smaller target. Make the fediverse stronger.
I'm going to go ahead and make a prediction about how the Meta / Facebook / Fediverse thing is going to play out.

Having donated even once to a Democratic candidate or progressive cause, you are punished with a lifetime of incessant spam.
My response: I've crafted email filters that block mail from companies that candidates and causes hire to do their email campaigns.
This means I probably block some worthy things I might actually want to see.
So everyone loses, because political spammers don't value the online community.
Most of New England’s solar capacity is represented by the region’s ~240,00 behind-the-meter, residential-scale rooftop solar systems. *That* is the power of rooftop solar.
Now, just wait until domestic load and residential-scale battery storage are aggregated!
The future of energy is distributed.
As the next 'week of action' approaches in #Atlanta and people rally to continue the fight to #StopCopCity, cities across the US are planning rapid-response demonstrations if forest defenders are again repressed by police.

Mastodon lets you set up custom timeline filters which automatically CW or completely hide posts with a specific word or phrase.
To add a filter:
1. Log in through your server’s website
2. Go to ⚙️ Preferences > Filters (On the mobile website click ⚙️ then ☰ then Filters
3. Click Add new filter button
4. Choose the settings you want, then click Save New Filter
There are nuances to using the filters, and I've done a list of tips about them at:

Some of the world’s biggest energy firms want to make the credits available to companies that use fossil fuels to produce hydrogen. But environmentalists warn this would trigger a disastrous cycle in which fossil-fuel-fired power plants help firms produce dirty hydrogen that then causes dirty power plants to run more often – undercutting limits on carbon pollution proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/06/23/how-hydrogen-subsidies-could-cause-doom-loop-climate/
"Some argue that rapidly scaling back #FossilFuel production would leave billions of pounds of “stranded assets”, [and] would impoverish the public through a fall in the value of #savings and #PensionFunds.
The study found that in high-income countries two-thirds of the financial losses would be borne by the most affluent 10%.
Just 3.5% of financial losses from #StrandedAssets would affect the poorest half of Americans & could easily be compensated for by government."

Hey, #lawfedi, I have a question about DMCA Takedown Notices.
The advice I'm seeing online about how one is to write one includes indicating the URL where the "original material" "is" "online". What happens when the original material is no longer being served? That is, the infringing site is serving, without permission, copyrighted material which is not anywhere on the internet anymore, not even in the WayBack machine?
Asking for a bunch of #therapists whose old PsychToday profiles & photos were ripped off apparently years ago and are current being served by a directory site without their permission, but who have either long since taken down their PsychToday profiles or changed them so they no longer show the version of the profile that's being infringingly served.
