Are there any #shotwell devs here in the #Fediverse? I'm wondering if anyone's working on 'publish to Peertub instance' functionality...

Another of my information streams on the subject of lithium is the #VisionZero #urbanists I follow here on Mastodon, who note that one of the many benefits of compact urban design, public transit, and a cultural focus on smaller lighter vehicles would be a dramatically smaller societal demand for lithium compared to a continued focus on individual ownership of midsized to large automobiles.

I just completed a thread about my reactions to an interview on PRX's _The World_ about how the Chilean government is trying to manage lithium extraction in the country.

The thread is meant for general consumption, but most of the posts in the thread are followers-only, in an attempt to evade scraping.

Periodic reminder: public corporations are the problem. They're not the solution. They're not even part of the solution. The solution is a world without them. That is the lesson we must take to heart.

Many of us are, often through no fault of our own, totally dependent on corporations. We need to break those dependencies as a top priority. Until then, we won't make much progress at making the world better.

Hot take on the U.S. presidential election

Bernie as Mr. Block. I lost a lot of faith in Bernie, when he didn't go 3rd party in 2016. Lost all faith when he did the same in 2020. Not surprised to see him supporting a Biden reelection; his message is 'trust in the system'.

The Mr. Block Democrats keep hoping for the next "New Deal Democrat" to replace the established Monty Hall Democrats (Let's Make A Deal Democrats).

Microsoft's Edge browser appears to be sending all the URLs you visit to its Bing API website.

Reddit users first spotted the privacy issues with Edge last week, noticing that the latest version of Microsoft Edge sends a request to bingapis.com with the full URL of nearly every page you navigate to. Microsoft tells The Verge it's investigating ...

Another must-read newsletter post from the consistently excellent @msifry -- this one's about some of AI's prominent attackers and insiders:

"Clowns to the Left, Jokers to the Right"

theconnector.substack.com/p/cl

"While self-styled tech ethicists Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin warn that AI is about to end human agency, a Biden AI advisory panel stacked with industry reps avoids the hard calls."

"lawyers told Fox execs that Murdoch would be 'disgraced on the stand, run out of the boardroom, and his testimony will expose him as a lunatic sliding into senility.'"

That is intriguing. And will make the shareholder lawsuits even more interesting. Very Sumner Redstone.

@lightweight which is another thing to consider with earn it, chat control and Online Harms. Scanning everyone's private communications isn't going to get you intelligence really either.

You still need analysis, and AI isn't going to help with that either.

'Artificial Intelligence' is a marketing term. It's misleading based on most people's understanding of 'intelligence'. It's really exactly the opposite of intelligent.

So the #ChiefEconomist of the #BankOfEngland thinks that citizens and businesses “need to accept” they are poorer, and stop pushing prices higher and seeking pay increases, no doubt while drawing a salary in the hundreds of thousands if not millions. Talk about tone deaf.
