As the federal government looks expand solar development on public lands, 2 questions emerge: what are country’s public lands for, and are they the best places for utility-scale solar projects? https://insideclimatenews.org/news/19022023/solar-public-lands/

Lots of comments on this thread, I'm not going to be able to respond to all of them, sorry. Stuff you can do:
Tell others what is happening! Most people have no idea of the terrible consequences of unregulated development of orbit will be in the very near future.
Don't buy satellite internet! Or if you have to, tell your provider that you care about safety and dark skies
Go enjoy the beautiful night sky! And bring a friend!

Here's an uncomfortable American history fact. While folks often point out that after Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Hitler refused to shake his hand.
But what happened next? Well, after returning home, Owens & 17 other Black Olympians were denied an invite to the White House. Instead, President Roosevelt only invited white Olympians. And it wasn't until 2016 that the White House finally apologized and invited their descendants to the WH.
2016.

The Swedish government advises against using Zoom in a recent report.
Sensitive information is at risk, and more secure solutions are available, like Nextcloud Talk.

As @JosephMenn reports, Russian propagandists are eager buyers of Twitter Blue.
This is because Twitter Blue privileges their posts in Twitter's relevancy algorithm, ensuring their propaganda achieves more reach.
It also gives them a fancy blue badge.
Russian propagandists aren't the only bad hombres buying Twitter Blue. A few months ago, I discovered that the Taliban are also paying for the service.
Twitter Blue: loved by Putin and the Taliban!
I warn my students about stories that are accurate but not true. Bret Stephens' anti-mask screed today is a good example of that — and what makes it accurate is a brief aside that he buries in order to cover his sorry ass. #journalism #covid My Media Nation post: https://dankennedy.net/2023/02/22/bret-stephens-wants-you-to-misunderstand-an-easily-misunderstood-report-on-masking/
This is HUGE.
"The National Labor Relations Board ruled Tuesday that employers can no longer demand laid-off employees avoid publicly disparaging the company as part of their severance agreements, nor can they stop affected employees from disclosing the terms of their exit packages. Doing so, the federal agency determined, would be a violation of the laid-off employees’ rights under the National Labor Relations Act."

Dying search engine #Bing (and its clones, like DDG, Ecosia, Neeva, Qwant, Yahoo, etc.) keeps putting some really old pages up top for site:lucire.com. This page is second. It was written in 1999 and hasn’t been linked by current pages for over two decades. Check out the Amazon logos!
Malcolm X was assassinated 58 years ago today. This remains as one of my favorite pieces of wisdom he shared. And now, they're making it illegal to even claim the knife is there.
"If you stick a knife in my back nine inches and pull it out six inches, there's no progress. If you pull it all the way out that's not progress. Progress is healing the wound that the blow made. And they haven't even pulled the knife out much less heal the wound. They won't even admit the knife is there." — Malcolm X
If you're using Mastodon on a computer, there's an optional "advanced" mode available on your server's website.
By default Mastodon uses a simple single column, but advanced mode is a Tweetdeck-style multicolumn interface that lets you add as many columns as you want. This includes a special pinned hashtag feed where you can combine, require or exclude particular tags within a single feed.
To find out how to activate and use advanced mode, click here:

Individual journalists can do their part by urging journalism trade organizations and associations in which they are members to ban Fox employees.
If the answer is no (or no answer), journalists should resign from those trade groups -- and say why.
Journalists should also lobby donors to those trade groups to apply pressure to keep Fox out.
Doing nothing is, at this point, more than just acquiescence. It borders on complicity.
Nativist militias have set up camp alongside the US-Mexico border to intercept migrants heading north. In recent years these groups' activities have become increasingly extreme — and ever more ambitious.
A series of videos indicates that members of one Arizona-based militia have even crossed into Mexico in a series of 'undercover operations'.
If Big Journalism doesn't start treating the Murdoch family's poison-spewing Fox "News" like the rogue propaganda-for-power-and-money outfit that it is, the craft will demonstrate its utter contempt for journalistic ethics.
The Fox-McCarthy partnership is one of the most egregious examples yet -- and simply covering it as just another story is not nearly enough.
The times grow more and more dangerous, and Big Journalism is not up to the job -- yet. https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/20/politics/kevin-mccarthy-tucker-carlson-january-6-footage/index.html

...authors and realized it had the same feel as things that had come before like UML. A bunch of methodologists with a product to sell looking to team up to increase profits by selling to developers who were of a "code is king!" mindset.
When you can't prove or disprove any processes, then it's easy to get people to buy into new ones.
Maybe someday software development will become science, based on measurement, but until then we'll just be suckers for that next silver bullet.
#DumbAllOver
It's kind of funny how the Agile Manifesto launched a whole cottage industry seemingly with the goal to punish software developers with some trite phrases that all said the same thing, "trust your people".
That basic message of course appealed to a lot of software developers, who could only dream of having real autonomy, but they should have recognized the lack of supporting evidence, room for broad interpretation, and the process dollars to be made.
The look of the composition of the...
Every year, Americans spend billions on #TaxPrep services, paying a heavily concentrated industry of giant, wildly profitable firms to send the #IRS information it already has. Despite the fact that most other rich countries have a far more efficient process, many Americans believe that adopting this process here is either impossible, immoral, or both.
